    Luft Eagles from Show

    Hi All,
I picked these up at a small military show about an hour from my home. I am sure about the top one, pretty sure about the second one, and not so sure about the third one. Any and all comments would be received greatfully. Please let me know what you all think. Price was $50 $50 & $25.
    Thanks in advance,
    Terry Keller

      Hi Terry,

If you don't mind me getting to the point and being blunt. The top eagle is original, the other two are very common reproductions.

          Hi again Willi,
In fact I thought that right AFTER I bought them. That is when I remembered what was said about the real ones here on the form. With any luck I will be able to return the bad ones as one came from reputable dealer and the other I have not paid for yet. What price should a real one demand? PM me if you need to.
          Thanks,
          Terry Keller

            Hi Terry,

The greunmeliert backed eagle is worth far more than you paid for all the eagles combined. If you don't get your money back for the others you have still done very well!

                Hi John,

The second eagle is on a backing cloth that was never used on smock eagles. Someone tried to copy a HBT backing, but the cloth is not weaved correctly. Smock eagles would be on the heavier Grünmeliert backing (such as the top one), or a very thin cotton twill. Eagles on HBT jackets, and some splinter ground division jackets, could be HBT. That second eagle looks good from the front details....but as most Luft eagles the key is on the details of the back of the eagle. This odd heavy cotton green backing is a dead giveaway on this one too. Have seen a number of these eagles at shows over the last 4 years or so. The bottom one is a fantasy piece.......a trapazoid eagle in splinter did not exist. And the back details are poorly done.

Now that I have had the chance to see Terry's first eagle in the flesh, I wonder how many noticed that the back of it is splinter camouflaged . What do you make of that John/Willi, ever seen that before ? Normal or manufacturer's mistake ?
Interested to see others if anyone has one.

                    Regards
                    Steve

Good catch Steve. I knew the top one was good, so I only focused on the backs of the ones I thought were bad.

Yes, I have an eagle like that too. Apparently they used splinter over olive fabric, reversed the camo to the green side and made the eagles that way. The only reason I can figure is that they needed green backed eagles for green smocks and used the material they had in front of them...which was splinter over olive. Since we don't want to remove eagles from green smocks.... .we don't know how widespread this was done. It is kinda interesting.

On the back of mine above, you can only see the dark green and brown camo pattern with a radom rain pattern streak here or there.....the green base is not vissible. Here is the front.
