    Belt

As promised, here is the belt that was in the helmet. No clue if it is related. It wasn't on the same certificate so I don't think it was found at the same time.

Unlikely that the belt and buckle are related to the helmet. Appears to be a politival buckle or sorts, maybe the buckle guys can help.

Ben, you are right about the rivet. Maybe it is a repair at the point where the back strap attaches to the side strap. Jack, can you post a closeup of that rivet on the side of the chinstrap?

I'll try and post a better picture of that section. May take a little while, I don't have a digital camera or scanner. Have to take pictures, get them developed and then scanned at a friends house.

I spoke to soon. My wonderful wife just bought me a digital camera for our anniversary. My first pictures.

Is this the rivet you wanted?

Yes Jack that is the rivet in question. Looks like the back strap came free (the stitching) from the side strap and someone (maybe your grandfather) put a rivet to keep them together. The back strap is now behind of side strap, instead of in front of. My guess is that is a postwar repair.

Thanks for the info. No clue on the rivet. My grandmother had stated he rarely pulled the trunk out and didn't talk about it. The trunk hasn't been opened since 1970 when he passed away, so I know it is not recent.
