Glider pilots in Norway, June, 1940

    Giday everyone,

I am seeking information about the glider pilots who were intended to supply the mountain troops fighting in Norway with Artilery?

I understand that 21 Ju 52's towing DFS 230 gliders flew to Aalborg, in Denmark, on 27 May, 1940. Then, on 1 June, 1940, the Ju 52's and the DFS 230 gliders flew on to Drontheim.

However, I also understand that because of bad weather and the withdrawl of British troops from the area around Narvik on 4 June, 1940, the mission was aborted. As a consequence, the Ju 52's and the DFS 230 gliders departed Drontheim on 15 June, 1940 for their base at Hildesheim.

Does anyone know whether the same glider pilots involved in the abovementioned mission were also involved in the events of 10 May, 1940, namely the capture of the Fortress of Eben Emael and the bridges over the Albert Canal? In addition, does anyone know the names of any of the glider pilots involved in the Norwegien mission?

Lastly, does anyone know whether any paratroopers from Sturmabteilung Koch were also involved in the Norwegien mission?

I look forward to reading your comments.

    All the best,

    Ian Tannahill

    Glider pilots => Norway

    Hello Ian,

To answer your questions, you are correctly informed about the planned mission and the point that the mission was canceled due to several reasons ( already given by you )

It is my firm believe that many of the same 10 May Glider pilots where involved and I confirm at least one who took part in both missions ( so normally the others would also be active as it was the same glider unit : 17./KGzbV 5 who was planned to fullfill this particualr mission ) , also keep in mind that that at that point there where not that much already completely trained Glider pilots available etc ... and the Eben Emael veterans ( altough this is is a wrong term => it should be 10 May veterans ) where already experienced .

Hopefully I was of some help for you

    Cordial greetings,

      Giday Stijn,

      Thanks for your comments.

Would the glider pilot you mentioned be the same glider pilot who was a member of Sturmgruppe Stahl? Unfortunately I have not got my notes with me.

      All the best,

          Giday Stijn,

As a matter of interest, listed below are the names of some of the Fallschirmjäger who were passengers in Ludwig Egner's glider:

          Obj. Baethge (Leader of squad)
          Friedrich Jeppsen+
          Werner Reuter+
Siegfried Fickel (wounded - stomach and abdominal area)

Jeppsen, Reuter and Fickel were members of a machine gun team.

          All the best,

          Ian
