    Thanks,

I self do believe that this a Fallschirjäger unit that fought in Nijmegen around the roadbridge and was able to escape to the north together with Hartung and Kampfgruppe Nijmegen.

I have a account that about a Kompanie of Fallschirmjäger were in position at the Nijmegen bridge by the evening of the 17th.

The Fsj-A.O.K. Lehrstabes fur Offizierausbildung was at Nijmegen (= Hartung)... So maybe, about 110 strong. It could have been this unit that people saw arrive at Nijmegen bridge at the evening of the 17th.

Its may be possible that Hemsod was from Fallschirmjäger A.u.E. Regt 1 (Oberst Hencke... the same Hencke I named in another topic on this forum)
Hartung does mention Oberst Hencke in his account.

I have lots of books about MG available, problem they just copy everything from each other without doing a propper research. They use almost all the same source (Kershaw: it never snows in september) but I do know there are many and many mistakes in it, especialy about Nijmegen and Arnhem...

Had hoped we could nail Hemsod to a unit that would make it more clear.

I also started to wonder if the name Hemsod is correct written in the HG B account as I can find nothing on the web about persons with that name...

      Names that sound as.....

This are names that turn up at the Gräberachweis des Volksbundes. They sound like Hemsod (phon.).....and are existing last names in Germany. All other variations of this name had NO HITS at the Gräbernachweis site. Seems that the name is typical for the city/village of Hohenaverbergen near Bremen in northern Germany. There more KIA's listed with this name...most are from Hohenaverbergen.

Maybe it could give some direction.......I show only the ones KIA after the Market Garden actions :

Behind the last names hides a link to the data on the Volkbundes site

Old thread but some new information - Kampfgruppe Hemsoth fought at Haalderen, near Nijmegan against 6th Battalion, The Green Howards in September 1944. The Green Howards were a component of 50th Northumberland Division which itself was part of XXX Corps which was trying to push through to the bridges.
The German forces put up bitter resistance and the village of Halderen didn't fall until 6th October.
