The name looks like Paul Lorenz Watut. This isn't a German name but sounds Polish\Russian. Where was he born?

A good idea for undecipherable surnames is to find the entry for the next of kin (usually on page 4 somewhere). This is nearly always written in a different hand to when the book was first made out.

Yes,I think that he was Polish(Polen-I take is Polish in German)?
Is Watut a Polish Name then?
          Thanks and regards,lynton.

No idea, but that is definitely what it says. Of course may not be spelt like that in Polish...

              watut ?

              think no German
              no Polska

              only find this:
The Watut say their language is Hamtae, after a place of this name
near Aseki where Upper Watut ancestors are believed to have originated. .

think , watut is not the Name of the soldier.

                Hello Lynton,

On page three look at block 4. It should give the location of his birth which may give you the possible lead needed.

                Regards

Yes, Watut is an region, river and a tribe in Papua New Guinea. I'm not sure that helps us much.

On the Volksbund site there are two Watutin's...both Russian. Of course in English this would be Vatutin as in the Soviet general.

Looking at the name it is textbook Suetterlin - compare the leeter formation to the alphabet on this site - http://www.peter-doerling.de/Englisch/Sutterlin.htm

I Think you are correct Gary!Looking at Page 4,Section 13 it looks like his fathers name in the box,and I would say it is Watut..
                    What do you think?
I will also post a scan of Page 3,section 4+5,to show his place of Birth and Nationality.

                          Hello Lynton,

Thanks for providing the additional scans of the page 3 block 4 as I previously mentioned in my earlier post to you. The spelling you have is of the Germanic... Golassowitz located in the Pless District, Upper Silesia. The Polish naming is Golasowice, District of Pawlowice. Golassowitz is a fairly small place. Interestingly, this village was populated largely with ethnic Germans who had immigrated there from Hungary in the 16th Century. The inhabitants were relocated to Germany after 1945. Hope this helps.

                          Regards

It looked like Watut to me also....didn't post as Gary was spot on
It is a name that exists in the phone directory as there are 3 listed at the moment...uncanilly 2 are Paul Watut!!!

There is no one with that name is listed on the German War Graves site however.
