Hi Doug, the guns came in two versions. Here is a photo of the simplified version, the "M38/42" made from 1942 onwards.

The earlier one, the "M38" featured a finned barrel. Both had the unique double trigger. One for single shot and the other for full auto
Cheers, Ade.

Hi Doug, you have found the right one
Your chap served in Replacement & Training Company of Construction Pioneer Battl.17. here is some info on where they were based at different times:

They spent time in Czech Republic.
Cheers, Ade.

Schmisser 28/40
Dear Sirs,
I have been looking into getting a schmisser 38/40 for my father. While I know that they are quite an investment I would gladly get it for him as he has a beautiful array of Wehrmacht weapons and clothing but is still missing this submachine gun. Can you please email me privately or publicly to inform me of a possible lead? I appreciate all of the help.
Thank you,
Lovelylady

The berretta 38/42 and earlier variations icluding the 1938A (which has a jacketed perforated barrel). The 38A came in three versions one had long slots in jacket, second had round holes, and the third has what appears to be 3 triggers.the first is semi (in front), second full and third a safety. on the 38/42 the safety is dropped and the remaining triggers are for full and semi. This weapon was extremely popular and well liked by the Alpini, M Battalions and most famously the Waffen SS. buildable Parts kits are available for both versions and this is a fairly easy homebuild for a very nice dummy gun, or reenacting or airsoft conversion.
Lovelylady,
EMP 38or 40 which is incorrectly called the Schmeisser (Hugo designed the MP18) . Erma MP38/40's in operational condition (which is a class III firearm which means he would have to buy it, since it is against the law to buy a weapon for someone else). Are extremely expensive the last one I saw sold for over $20,000. the lowest you will find is in the 17,000 range. I suggest getting a subscription to the Shotgun News and watching the ads dilligently. Try calling SARCO Inc. And ask for Dave. They get a lot of CIII weapons. their website is www.sarcoinc.com Alternatively, a professional built Dummy gun with original parts and a machined receiver is just as nice (without any paperwork or government inquiries), and costs maybe up around a thousand dollars (spend money on matching #'s great condition etc. when buying a parts kit) If you live in California this is the best you can hope for. Most reproductions are probably not going to be good enough quality for your fathers collection! However, there is a really neat blank Firing MP-40 that is all metal (except the grips) and a kick in the pants to shoot! they are around $250-300.
