Promotion vs appointed to Hauptfeldwebel

    Promotion vs appointed to Hauptfeldwebel

    Here is my question, can an Oberfeldfewebel or Oberwachmeister only appointed as Hauptfeldwebel/Hauptwachmeister and then "demoted" to Oberfeldwebel7Oberwachmeister when transfer of another NCO fulfill the position or this must be a full promotion to this rank?

    Yes i think that that is possible. Hauptfeldwebel was not a rank but an army-assigment (in German: Dienststellung).

    I think i got an example, see the picture:

    Also soldbucher from 116pzdiv. And 1944-1945 eastfront pockets, kampfgruppe and Oder front.

      Sometimes ranks of Stabsfeldwebel and Hauptfeldwebel were mixed and no clear boundaries, now clear first was a rank, second a position, the mother of the company that could be fulfill by lower ranks as Feldwebel and Oberfeldwebel.

      Now one more question why if it is not a promotion is notated on page 1?

        Good question..
        By the way, i have a photo-album of this guy, and on a later date he was no Hauptwachtmeister anymore. Just a Stabsfeldwebel (he removed the stripes from his uniform).

          I think is normal if he was appointed as Haupt he wore the rings till back to his normal position as it was not a promotion, the rings showed him as the company NCO when this assignment was over he took them out, is like an armband wore for the temporary detached to a Feldgendarmerie unit, finished the time remove the band.

            As long as you were an Unteroffizier you could be appointed Hauptfeldwebel "Der Spieß".....it was an appointment not a rank.

            Stabsfeldwebel was a rank. You were promoted to this only after 12 years military service. I believe also if promoted to Officer you went straight to Oberleutnant and skipped Leutnant.

                Now I will have to look and was going to bed! lol....

                If I remember correctly it was written on page 1 with "Ernennung" on page 3...... sometimes with additional words like "appointment to Hptfw. role/duty"..."Hauptfeldwebel-Diensttuer"

                Not sure if there was any extra pay for this but will try and look in the morning.....as I am off to bed now.....
