    Small, unusual Kriegsmarine Ausweis

    Hello,

I just picked this up today. I have seen such an Ausweis once before but never had one in my collection.

It is issued to Kraftfahrer Franz Richter by the Kriegsmarinewerft Lorient(?) though the paper is preprinted with Paris...and the date, 20. April 1944.

Wonder if they are sing this rather then a Soldbuch. The late date of issue is really interesting

Kapitänleutnant (Ing.) Thote was the officer by whom he was swoarn in 1.4.44.

I found one him some time earlier here. It could be him:

        Kriegsmarine, Marineausrüstungsstellen
        Marineausrüstungstelle St. Malo

Marineausrüstungstelle St. Malo bildades i januari 1941, och var underställd Seekommandant St. Malo fram till juli 1941, då den ställdes under Marineausrüstungs-und Reparaturbetrieb Cherbourg i tekniska frågor samt Hafenkommandant St. Malo i övriga frågor.

        Staben kapitulerade i augusti 1944.

        Leiter
        Oberleutnant (Ing.) z.V. Karl Thote (? januari 1941 – ? juni 1942)

          Hallo Gerdan,

I found the same thing, but was not sure if that was him.

Has anyone ever seen such an abbreviated version of a Soldbuch...if this is in fact what this was meant to replace...

It seems to be more complete then the Ersatz Soldbuch issued for missing soldbuch by the Lazarett.

It only seems valid for two quarters unless it was not kept up to date...I wonder if it was issued in lieu of a Soldbuch as they did not have any at the time?

                  Thanks for the additional Information.

Ian - it could well be something to replace a missing Soldbuch for a short period of time, but the document is called "Ausweis" so like the Soldbuch, like a Personalausweis. Maybe this enabled him to enter certain Areas, say the Harbour facilities in Lorient? And the text, "zum aktiven Wehrdienst einberufen und ist während dieser Zeit Soldat..." seems to hint at the fact that this is the only Ausweis / piece of ID issued in place of a Soldbuch...perhaps.

I did not find him in the Volksbund records and there is a Chance that more documents will turn up to this man - I will keep you posted!

                  Erich

                    Erich,

I didn't say missing I said in lieu of one...as they perhaps didn't have one to issue him at the time! The date he swore allegiance and date of issue would indicate he joined up around that time and not had change to lose his Soldbuch yet

I will have a look around...I have a couple of similar passes but seem to think they are Streifendienst.

                    /Ian
