    Gerhard May, KIA Soldbuch

Here is another Soldbuch from my collection, belonging to Gerhard May. He was born in Gülzow, Germany. And was buried in Pilsen, Czech Republic. There is a hospital entry for the day he died: April 8, 1945. The code is 31... I know it is an injury of some kind, but cannot make out what the letter is? One of the scans shows an entry, underlined in red which has the date he died. I cannot make it out, so if somebody is able to shed some light on this, I would appreciate it

                        Hi Rylan and all !

I think this is a very intersting Soldbuch, packed with entries !
Very tragic that he served in WW I and WW II and died just 1 month before the end.

During WW I he received the EK II. Before WW II his profession is listed as "Garagenbesitzer".
(I think this must be something like a "car repair workshop owner").

When he was drafted again in June 1940 to Lds.Btl. 333, he held the rank of Oberfeldwebel and after a
shortwhile was appointed Hauptfeldwebel (="Spiess") of the 4. Kp. LSB 333, located in Alt-Drewitz (p.18) :
                        http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/...tzBat333-R.htm

What really puzzled me, was the entry on p. 20 : dismissed on 4.3.1941, while at he same time he seemed
to continue to serve immediately afterwards. (See promotion entry on p. 3, dated 3.4.1941)
The reason must be a change in his military career structure, because he became an official, in this
case a "Kriegswerkmeister". This was an NCO rank, with the term "Kriegs" (shortcut : a.K.) meaning,
that it was only temporary, at the best for the duration of the war, but it could be rescinded at any time before.
(Which happened in his case on 31.12.1943, p. 3).
                        http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtop...?f=47&t=183157

A similar example of such an career switch can be found here (dismissed from beeing a soldier on 31.12.40 and
                        becoming a Kriegswerkmeister on 1.1.1942 (2. row, right) :
                        http://www.janssen-militaria.com/osc...oducts_id=5934

His first unit as Kriegswerkmeister was Heimatkraftfahrpark Berlin. He had then many changes in his units :
                        - Techn.Btl. 43 (mot)
                        - Bew.[egliche] Kfz. Inst.Kp. 194
                        - at some time in 1942 he must have been transferred to stab DiNafü (HQ supply services) of the 257. Inf.Div. :
                        http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/...onen/257ID.htm
He stayed with this unit probably until Oct. / Nov. 1943
                        - On. 1.Dec. 1943 he was with Kraftfahr-Park Brandenburg
                        ...
                        - In 1944 he must have been transferred to Krw.Transport-Abt. 567 and 592
                        - His last unit was Pz.Feldersatz-Btl. 59, a unit of 8. Pz.Div.

Hope that sheds some light on some of the many other entries.

                        Cheers,
                        Archi
