Ah ha. GJR 206 of the 7 Geb.Div. Both the EKII and IAB could well have been awarded for combat against Finnish forces during the retreat from Finland.

I can see a II Btl. on one of the stamps but do you know which kompanie? I'll see if i can give you a bit of history on it if possible.

In both SBs you should have some glued in typed notes that look something like this, to do with pay and exchanging Norwegian\Finnish money for Reichsmarks. These are useful as they often give a location, in this case Kvesmenes. do yours have these?




According to the divisional history of the 7 Geb.Div. II.\GJR 206 was in action between the 3rd and 7th October 44 along the road from Kemi to Tornio on the Finnish\Swedish border in NorthWest Finland. This was one of the major roads the 20 Geb.Armee was retreating along and the Germans had some sharp clashes with Finnish troops here. The award of the IAB in November reflects a quiter period when the 7 Geb Div were establishing themselves in a defensive line known as the Sturmbock Stellung in the far NW corner of Finland, around 100 miles or so from the Norwegian border. Here they stayed through the winter before moving out of this temporary line in early 1945 and retreating in to Norway. By May 1945 the 7 Geb.Div. was stretched out along the length of Norway, i don't know where the 7 Kompanie was but perhaps your SB holds the answer?

The 6 Geb.Div. SB shows a soldier who spent most of the war with the divisional supply units and, i would guess, was only transferred to 8.\GJR 143 towards the end of the war. II.\GJR 143 ended the war at a place called Lalle (Lulleness today) this was where the Northernmost German units were located at wars end. I know the area like the back of my hand and have done a fair bit of digging there.

This will do! It shows him being at Skjold. This was and remains an army garrison pretty much in the middle of nowhere a couple of hours drive away from where i live in Tromsø. That to me seems to indicate he was possibly with Feldersatz Btl. 118, the replacement unit for the 6 Geb.Div. which was located here.

Don't worry about the wife, mine isn't exactly interested either. Come over here in the summer and you can have a firkle about with me
