Interesting Soldbuch. The Zielfernrohr and Zielfernrohr-gewehr on page 8c were both issued in April of '44, and the zf is IDed as a "4x90" which is a marking found on an Ajack sniper scope.

Another rifle was issued in Feb of '45.

Usually in a sniper Soldbuch the ammunition issued is IDed as "90 Schuss Spezialmunition"; this could indeed be the correct ammo.

Very Similar in Appearance of this Sniper compared to one in Soldbuch . But the difference is the Scope on this SSR is an Early PreWar Ajack 6X .

hennep11, yes, the soldier was issued at least two K 98s and four different scopes. Sometimes soldiers (usually the best marksmen) were trained with sniper rifles at divisional training schools and then turned the rifle in when they were assigned to a field unit (I have seen this in two separate Soldbücher). Once in the field, they could have been issued a sniper rifle or a standard rifle.

Your soldier apparently was issued a K 98 with scope by his field unit, was wounded, and delivered to a military hospital without this weapon. In March 1945, he was issued a standard K 98.

I recently acquired a Soldbuch for a Gebirgsjäger who was a full-fledged sniper. He initially was issued a G 33/40 mountain carbine. On 14 August 1944, he was issued the following:

                            - K 98
                            - Zielfernrohr (Scope)
                            - Doppelfernrohr (Binoculars)
                            - Winterabzug (Winter Trigger); this device allowed a soldier to fire his weapon with heavy gloves on.
                            - Gummiblende (Rubber Eyepiece)
                            - 2 Mündungskappen (2 Lens Caps)
                            - Reinigungsgerät (Rifle Cleaning Kit)
                            - 90 Schuß Munition für Scharf-Schtz. (90 Rounds of Ammunition for Snipers)
