    Mystery location in Wehrpass

    Hey everyone,
I recently purchased my first Wehrpass belonging to a mountain troop. Inside is a letter that I have translated concerning his death. The soldier was killed in battle at Krasnaya Gorka, and was later buried in "Lukanowka", which is supposed to be a town on the Ugra river. So far, every attempt to figure out where this town is has resulted in failure. It is almost like it no longer exists. I have seen it mentioned in other death notices for German soldiers, but don't know anything else about the place. Does anyone have any information about this village? Was is just the name of the particular cemetery? Maybe someone has more experience with this sort of thing. Any info would be great! Thanks.

    Hi Nick!

I searched and found another person buried in Lukanowka. The entry was:
    Lukanowka /Juchnow [Yukhnov].

I also found a map on Google with Juchnow/Yukhov designated with a red dot. See the upper right quadrant:

Awesome! Thanks for the photo. Do you think the name of the town was changed? I have found information on Juchnow, but still nothing on Lukanowka. Maybe this is just a difference in translation between German and Russian?

The distance from Krasnaya Gorka to Yukhnov is 228km today. Also, the Lukanowka/Juchnow I found is far from the Ugra River, which is close to Smolensk -- so I wonder if the Lukanowka/Juchnow I found is the place your soldier is buried?

If this map below opens, A= Grasnaya Gorka, B=Yukhnov, C=Ugra River; ABC intersect to form a crooked "T". A= base, B= left branch, C= right branch.

Apparently there are many different sites called
        Grasnaya Gorka in various districts?

We need a Russian specialist here!

In my experience, these names can be names of extremely small locations, sometimes not even the name of a village, but simply the name of a miniscule district or farm near the village. Add to that that the names could be misspelled and that the correct spelling is in cyrilics, and you will understand why you may have difficulty finding the place.
