    Dug-up dogtag :D help please

I finally found my first German dogtag. I dug this on a PoW camp in the UK. ummmm I was going to attach a photo but I have no idea how.

The dogtag reads "3K (E) SS D 3765" with an addition set of SS "runes" at the top hole and between the bottom two holes.

Can anyone tell me what this all means and how on earth I can get a name of the owner if at all possible?

oh mate, I was over the moon just finding a complete dogtag I didn't even wipe the dirt off until I got home. Then to suddenly see the SS runes showing though the muck I was screaming... my wife saying things like "Is that good then?" and "thats nice dear"

How do I find out more about this unit? Any tips?

Also heading back to this site at the weekend to give it a better search... maybe more

          Wow.
What type of detector do you use ?
The dogtags owner was in 3 coy of the famous "Deutschland" regiment.
Only google it and you will find out a lot of this regiment/division.
It think it would be difficult to find out anything about the owner as he survived and was a POW.
It is possible to find out the soldiers KIA but then you have to have a dogtag found on the battlefield. Somewhere in Germany they can help you with that. But I dont know where?

          Regards
          Derek

              No ! He wasn`t !!!

He made his basic training in the replacement battalion of the regiment SS Deutschland.

1.) The replcement battallion was not part of the regiment DEUTSCHLAND !

2.) He only made his basic training in the replacement battalion of the regiment SS Deutschland. After that he could be transferred to all other units of the Waffen SS you can think.

After transferring to a new unit, the german soldier wears his "old" (with former unit) dogtag til the end of the war...

With the dogtag inscript, you can`t say to wich unit he belonged to.

              Best regards, Fronti

Great, I think I'm now even more confused than when I first found it!

So I take it he would have always stayed within the SS. But, literally he could have been put with any unit! Doesn't really narrow it down much

I can post pics if someone explains how too. I have a couple of pics on facebook with all my other bits. Here is the link to it, you should be able to view it as its public folder. Apologies for the bad pics, used my phone, also, if you jump forward a few pics I have drawn over the text to highlight it (only on the picture, not on the tag!)

                http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fb...type=3&theater

I only have a couple of basic metal detectors, when detecting over here you don't need anything expensive or powerful as most items are very near the surface. That tag was probably no more than an inch or two down.

I also dug on a different pow camp and found 2x 1/4's of German ID tags, but sadly I can't make out much of the text.

Yes Fronti that is so correct as it can be.
                  Here is one example:
We found a soldier last year near the Hasselman hight in Karelen. He was in "Skijegerbataljonen" but his dogtag was "Frw. Legion Norwegen" - the unit he transfered to in 1942. He was KIA in 1944.
