Photoshopped pics are not that uncommon from back then. Not every soldier could get a new portrait done every time he won an award. As a DKiG winner it should be easy to verify or refute this one.

Well obviously not photoshop (strange how it's become a general word for photo editing and manipulation) but this practice was very common

I see nothing wrong with this. Kiermeier won the DKiG on 5th Nov.42 and was killed in action on the 26th, this is an earlier studio photo that has been retouched after his death to include all his awards.

Happens with RKT photos also. I have a few with wartime added RK's.

Some retouchers were really good. Have a look at this one: Major Wilhelm Braun from Inf.Rgt.576 was awarded the RK during the final days at Stalingrad. Captured, never returned. His family had this portrait commissioned. Notice that a shadow from his collar has also been added on top of the RK.

Some retouching was more crude... The family of this fallen Oberstleutnant drew pips on his shoulder boards with a pencil to reflect his final rank.

Excellent thread, a real eye-opener. I had one portrait that was altered to include a CCC and wound badge and always wondered at it.

How can we be sure if something was altered early or is a modern fake? Anyone have any comparisons for us?

Here's another one. This officer was killed at Cholm in January 1942. Again, his family commissioned a portrait. Looks like all awards were painted on.
