How to display Soldbuchs??

Will it damage the soldbuch to display it page opened (so the photo can be seen) in a riker case or wooden display case along with some badges & shoulderboards??

IMO it will cause damage, same as the light over the years.

Make a good scan / colour xerox, that can be easily displayed - and keep the SB in the shoebox.

Over extended periods of time, absolutely. Remember, these Soldbücher and Wehrpässe are 65 to 70+ year old paper books and gravity (if they are displayed vertically in stands), dust, UV light, even occasional handling will all cause irreparable damage. No book should ever be laid open for a lengthy period of time as this causes damage to the binding and spine.

The majority of my ID collection is stored in individual plastic sleeves which are kept in safe deposit boxes in a climate controlled bank vault. Once or maybe twice a year, I will go pull out portions of my ID collection and set everything up for a few days in display cases I have at home in my office (these cases are usually used for displaying other collectibles, scale models, etc.) I only keep these set up for a day or two and so far I have yet to see any damage from having these displayed, although I am quite sure that having them set up like this for any length of time would surely have a damaging effect.

Here's a portion of my Wehrmacht Panzer/StuG/Panzerjäger/AFV crew Soldbuch, Wehrpass and document grouping collection, along with a few Infantry officer Soldbücher and SB/WP/doc groups (in the lower left and right hand corners). I use miniature wooden easels (intended for standing and displaying picture frames or plates) to display the Soldbücher and Wehrpässe, and small plastic coin stands for medals and badges. I have every award listed in all of the IDs displayed with the corresponding Soldbuch/Wehrpass/group (save for a half dozen PAB25s and PAB50's!), as well as cloth insignia such as collar tabs, shoulder straps, eagles, etc. I feel it makes for a very aesthetically pleasing display

I keep my lower award docs/ID's stored in archival boxes. The KC groups are framed (award docs/Soldbuch), though they are only high-quality scans. When people come over, it all looks original behind the glass. It's only when one looks up close that it is noticeable.

My original KC docs/Soldbuch, etc. are kept in safe-deposit box. No worries about damage, theft, etc. There's a big difference between damaging a $150 Soldbuch versus a $5000 one. The pricinple maybe the same, but dollar amount sure isn't.

Rob thank you for the kind words. Unfortunately I could not find any pictures of Weissinger, so I added a pic of Hetzenauer, to give the display a " sniper" feel. Type of creative license. Jacques Btw the pic is not in the actual soldbuch lol.

With all due respsect, as I think you are one of the 'good guys' on the forum and I've always enjoyed seeing photos of your collection, I would not advocate this approach as the proper way one should display a Soldbuch. The display looks great, I am commenting on the addition of a photo to the display of the Soldbuch. Especially, using the photo a well-known personality. Of course, it's your group so it's your perorgative - no problem there. I only say this because William is new to ID collecting and I think he should be aware that this approach would be frowned upon by some collectors. My opinion is Weissinger has his own story and his group should display only his stuff.

To William - your collection = your rules. Great thread topic though. You can read all the replies and decide what suits you.

Great displays!! the real problem is only when you have large konvoluts to exhibit due, in order to give a proper seeing to each document, this takes slot!

Your collection so you make the rules. I just figured William should know there are two sides. It really isn't a big deal at all. Hope you will continue sharing photos of your collection, it's definitely one of my favorites here on WAF.

I'm keeping my documents etc safe in shoe boxes. I rather keep it simple. One box for each unit i like. Saves me some space. My mannequins are displayed in my collecting room.

Soon after I started collection these I decided against the 'display' method because I feel like as collectors is is also our job to preserve these for future generations and such... I've got a few signed posters from bands on my wall that aren't even in direct sunlight and the signatures have faded significantly just in the last 5 years. I know it is visually pleasing to come home every day and look at your collection, but that is a small thing to give up to preserve these.

I bought the archival box from http://www.lightimpressionsdirect.com/ and it fits soldbuchs and wherpasses perfectly. It is almost like they were made to house them. I am still fairly new to collecting these, so I haven't filled up that box yet, but it looks like it could hold more then 50. For the solbuchs that are part of a larger grouping I have another archival box that it much more flat and wide that I keep those items in.

I haven't scanned each book yet (most though), so I try not to handle them too often and just look at the HQ scans. Although sometimes there is no better feeling then holding a soldbuch and thinking about all the history it has witnessed!
