    Battle of Stonne WIA Wehrpass

I am sharing some scans of the Wehrpass of Herbert Scheffler tonight. After his RAD service and military training he served with Infanterie-Regiment 32, part of the 24. Infanterie-Division. This division participated in the famous battle of Stonne (15th - 18th of May 1940) when it was thrown in as replacement for the withdrawn 10th Panzer-Division.

On the 17th of May, Herbert Scheffler participated in the Sturmangriff on the woody Mont Dieu hill just west of the village when he was shot by a French machine gun in his behind. Luckily, he was able to get rescued and was already in hospital in central-German city Kassel two days later. This was not self-evident, because French troops would resist until the 25th of May, resulting in very high losses on both sides.

Herbert Scheffler was originally awarded the black wound badge for this wound, but this was later upgraded to the silver wound badge, probably because of serious complications - he remained in hospital for almost two years. He was also awarded the EKII for the same action.

The Wehrpass comes with his silver wound badge document. I thought I would share this set, because good 'Stonne' related material seems hard to find.

The company clerk was too diligent filling out the battle dates. They were later crossed out and replaced by a single 'Sturmangriff gegen den Mont Dieu' entry for the May 1940 campaign. In the larger list you can see the battle for the Meuse near Sedan and the fightings for the hills on both sides of Stonne.

Nice set Tim. Could you please tell me what the date stamp is on the lower portion of page 2? It appears to be either 1940, or 1946-1948? Looks like it could have been done post-war by the local administration where he was living at the time. Interersting also that he recieved both his awards well past a year after they occured.

Very nice Tim. I can't recall seeing many, if any, WP to soldiers KIA/WIA at Stonne. A good acount of the battle is in the superb book To Lose A Battle: France 1940 by Alistair Horne.

                My thoughts exactly!
Thanks for your replies Jerry, Chris and Kevin.
The stamp on page 2 is indeed from his home town, Robenstein, the date is hard to read but could be 1945, 1946 or 1948.

                  Tim, very nice Wehrpass!
Is the Battle for the Stonne that well known battle regarding the failed German Panzer attack in France 1940?

Thanks Dennis. Yes, Stonne was the most famous tank battle of the French campaign.
See this excellent thread on the WAF for more information.
