All I can read is 'Gr Spl. ??????' = 'Grenade fragments ?????'

It's followed by "31b", which is the medical code for shrapnell wound, and "re. unterb.": right lower leg. The word partly written behind the medical code could be "Steckenschuss".

Partly I agree with Tim.

The word behind the medicalcode is "Steckschuß" (retained missile)


but "re. Unterb." one could also read "rechter Unterbauch" (right lower abdomen).

But the is only another proposal.

I'm thinking shrapnel or fragments that couldn't be removed.

The shrapnel,the bullet or the fragment can be removed by a surgeon.

"Steckschuss" means that the bullet stick in the body and did not pass it.

I think the other version you call "full penetration or shot right through"
