Here's a Wehrpass I just purchased from another member of the Forum. It's 100% solid, but the question I have relates to whether or not this soldier was present during the battle for Fortress Metz in November 1944. He was assigned to Ersatz und Ausbildungs Battalion (Magen) 282 - see the attached scan.
From 13 to 17 July 1944, he was with the 1. Kompanie of that battalion, when the Allies were still stuck in Normandy.
From 18 July to 21 August 1944, he served in 2. Kompanie, just about when the Allies began their breakout though Metz had not yet been declared a fortress.
From 22 August to 26 November 1944, he served with Ers. or En. or Ein. Kompanie of the same battalion. I can't make it out precisely - why would an Ersatz und Ausbildung Battalion have an Ersatz Kompanie? Could it be an abbreviation for Einsatz Kompanie? (That makes more sense - a mobilized element deployed to the filed to fight).
From 26 November 1944 to 24 March 1945, he was then with the Genesenden Kompanie, again same battalion.
Short history: Ersatz und Ausbildung Battalion (M) 282 was assigned to Division 462 in May 1944. This was not really a division at all, but one that was administrative, being resonsible for all the training and replacement units then in the Metz area. At the end of August 1944, it was mobilized as part of the Valkuere plan, and formed a large Kampgruppe (Kampfgruppe Krause) under the command of the Division CO.
Ers.u.Ausb.Btl.(M) 282 and Inf.Ers.u.Ausb.Btl. 208 were the two strictly training and replacement battalions in Kampfgruppe Krause and fought west of the city of Metz during the first week of September 1944.
In October, Division 462 was reorganized as 462. Inf.Div., with its three regiments being formed out of Officers & NCO candidates schools and Sicherungs-Regiment 1010. Ers.u.Ausb.Btl. (M) 282 was supposedly folded into Kampgruppe Wesel-Duesseldorf.
The question I have is, does anyone think this soldier may have fought at Metz in the Fall of 1944? He was certainly there until 21 August 1944, but the "Ers. or En.Kp." entry kind of throws me - can anyone offer any analysis? I've already consulted Tessin, Lexicon der. W., and the Feldpostuebersicht. Thanks --
