    LAH Soldbuch

    Good evening all,

Got this nice treat in the mail today and wanted to post a few pics. SS-Sturmmann Fritz Lück served in SS-Panzergrenadier Rgt 1 and was KIA on 6.1.45 during the Ardennes Offensive. He now rests as an unknown soldier in the Sandweiler Soldatenfriedhof (Luxembourg).

The Soldbuch is in beautiful condition and has the usual assortment of entries for clothing issues etc.. I attached a pic of the Winter Clothing issue as a matter of interest. It looks like Untersturmführer Deil indicated he died of his wounds on Page 1 below the red "X". Like others have encountered in W-SS Soldbuchs, this guy only shows being awarded the Black Wound Badge. He was wounded on 22 Jun 44 and with the LAH's combat activities between then and the day he died I'm sure he'd have earned an IAB.

    Enjoy.

    Bob

    2. In another post regarding an SS Soldbuch one of our contributors said SS-Panzergrenadier Rgt 1 was a unit in Hohenstaufen?? I don't know if I misunderstood him, but this appears to be pretty compelling proof that Rgt 1 is the Leibstandarte.

          That's a nice Soldbuch Waffenreich .

I also thought that previous SB was connected to LAH but it was Hohenstaufen.

There OoB lists Gren. Regt 1 (19) and 2 (20).

            Lah soldbuch

Very nice LAH soldbuch!!! I owned a lot of SS soldbuchs that only listed the BWB on the awards page. A few of my SS books had IAB entries, but for the most part, the Black Wound Badge was the only award listed. I own a SS-TK soldbuch, which has a fragment hole through the entire book, as well as blood splatters, and there is no Black Wound Badge listed, even though the battle-damaged soldbuch was still used after the soldier was released from the hospital. I enjoyed looking at your LAH soldbuch. Many thanks for posting it on the forum.

            Best regards,

            Tom

              Tom & Steve,

Appreciate the feedback I have always wanted a nice Soldbuch for an SS troop and short of a SNCO or officer in LAH this one will scratch that itch.

It's a real bummer that he was interred as an unknown because I would like to display a photo of his headstone with it. I am going to try to research the KTB for the LAH for that day to see if I can pin down exactly what town he was killed in and next week I am going to the National Archives to see what they have on file for him. I'll post the results mid-week.

One thing I found interesting is that he was issued an FN Pistol rather than the P-38 or -08.

Thanks again for the feedback and Tom if I decide to move this one day I will give you first crack at it as it seems you're pretty serious about your Soldbuch collection.

              v/r

              Bob

Hey. It is a really nice SB. I like it alot. The entries are typical for these. And the condition is really good. By the way: Many soldiers have taken a FN pistol. I have some friends from the LAH and other Divisions and they told me that they had the chance to get a FN at the weapon chamber. They just had to turn their P08 or P38 in. Yesterday I have visited one of my good friends (he was a LSSAH Panther gunner) and he has told me that they had many FN Pistols there. First he got issued with the P08 and then he has turned it in to get a FN... Regards Benny

                  Hi Bob
As jou know the Leibstandarte (with remnants of 1 SS PzGrenRegt ) fought form 30 Dec - 10 Jan 1945 in the Bastogne area
The date of his death (6.1.1945) after having been wounded "suggest" he was wounded in the fighting to close the "Assenois" gap where the US 4th armored Div broke through on dec 26th to Bastogne.
Villages where the 1 SS PzGren Regt fought in those few days:
Lutrebois, Villers-La-Bonne-Eau (with the hamlet of Losange).
There is always the possibilty he was wounded while his unit prepared for this action. US artillerie fired on a permanent base (interdiction-fire) on the villages of Livarchamps and Lutremange and exactly from there his unit started the attack in the early morning of december 30th.
Opponents for his unit were in a first phase the coys and platoons of the 134th and 137 US Inf Regts ( 35 US ID).

Thanks again for the feedback guys

Benny you are very fortunate to have friends who were veterans. Can anybody comment on the reaction from these guys when they see your collections?? It must make them feel 50 years younger. We have an Afrika Korps Nachrichten Leutnant who lives in my town and I keep meaning to contact him and have him over, but I'm still undecided on how to approach him. He lives in a local retirement home and I'm a bit afraid the folks there may stonewall my contact attempts. We'll see - maybe I'll make this my New Year's resolution.

Peter - Thanks a million for the info on the LAH's combat activities. I have alot of reference books, but lack specific unit combat chronicles. The info you gave me should enable me to more narrowly focus my efforts when I search KTB entries. Thanks again!!

Hope you all have a great weekend!

                      Bob
