    Question about German Identity Documents

    My question is:

Did the US War Department ever publish any type of manual or handbook for the various paperwork that a GI might come accross? Given the thousands of different documents it would seem lodgical to me that some manual exist.

And if so, would anyone know how to secure a copy?

    To your first question, yes:

The Exploitation of German Documents, Military Intelligence Division, War Department, Washington, DC. 1944

To your second, I have a photo copy somewhere but never been able to find an original copy so far!

"IDENTITY DOCUMENTS IN GERMANY,” printed in 1944 by G-2 (Counter Intelligence Sub-Division), Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force Evaluation & Dissemination Section.

This 8-1/4 x 12-1/2 inch publication has over 200 illustrated pages and was printed for intelligence sections.

This practically impossible to find manual is one of a range of books issued by G2 which included subject matters such as HJ, Polizei, Allgemeine SS and policies and procedures for the Military Occupation of Germany.

All SHAEF manuals are extremely difficult to find and can therefore command high prices.

Finally found a copy. Unfortunately, it is out of my price range.

            In case anyone is interested.

                It's ridiculously overpriced at $3,500.

I hope its not the one that was in a German auction that sold for €750.

Incidentally because of the size and amount of pages, even a .pdf from the National Archives is over £200!!!

Sounds like one to photograph the next time i'm there. Seems like they might have two copies.
