Walter Ludwig, SS Der Führer

The SS Der Führer regiment was part of the spearhead on the attack on Moscow 1941.
During the Soviet counteroffensive in the winter of 1941 outside the capitol, DF was moved in to hold a precarious position in the defensive line.
By the time the Russian attacks ceased there were only 35 men left out of the original 2000 strong regiment that started the campaign.
Walter was KIA in the last couple of weeks of the counteroffensive in February 1942. He was 21 yrs old

here is two I have now both in the same regiment 487 for the battle for Moscow.
Different companies but must have fought reasonably close together.
Photo's even look like they may have been taken at the same place.

nice SS uniforms in his soldbuch, and nice marching in the field, 4 NCOs leading their men, which shows how important the NCO is roling in the troops.
