    Alfred Wittekind, an hero in the Heimat.

    A very nice and beautiful Luftschutz-Dienstbuch belonging to Oberwachmeister der L.S.Polizei Alfred Wittekind. Born on 1st of February, 1903 in Hamburg. He was awarded three awards: Kriegsverdienstkreuz 2. Klasse mit Schwerten, Eisernen Kreuz 2. Klasse and Eisernen Kreuz 1. Klasse (not common to Luftschutz personal!).

    He saw a lot of horror and action, he u.a. was there during the massive bombings in Hamburg (many times), Bremen, Lübeck and Kiel. This is a very nice dienstbuch to forgotten heroes. He was discharged in the Luftschutz because he was needed for Wehrdienst in the Polizei-Reserve.

                            It may not be as interesting as it seems but it really is. These are the forgotten heroes of the war. Warning for air raids, organizing and maintaining air raid shelters, fire fighting, rescueing operations after airbombings, the extremely hazardous work of dismantling un-exploded bombs, looting prevention and the organisation of all kinds of emergeny measures.

                            His personal handling of un-exploded bombs is even mentioned in the Dienstbuch a number of times!

                              for me the two E.K. I and E.K. II entries are a bit strange. This E.K. I Klasse entry is dated 4.8.1943 and the E.K. II Klasse is dated 8.8.1943 only 4 days later - and the entry without any signature or stamps.
