WOW! A Polish Bandenkampfer SB/WP set!

    Hi Guys!
I don't really collect docs but just couldn't refuse myself to have this set.
Polish citizen of Toruń/ Thorn who was forced as many in Westpreussen to sign Volksliste and then drafted to WH. As a Pole he was in FJ Btl.999 and sent to Greek island where he chased local partisans.
The most interesting part is actually part of his Soldbuch used as a diary when he was taken POW ( this is the only case of such SB use I've ever seen). Enjoy!

        Nice set.

Before I changed my collecting interest to Hunde only, I also had some nice Soldbuchs / Wehrpasses from both actual ethnic Germans and "forced" Polish, Hungarian, Russian, etc., "ethnic" Germans. One of my regrets is selling (through Mohawk Arms 8 or 10 years ago) a (Wehrmacht) Panzer Soldbuch from an "ethnic" Russian who served in a unit equipped with captured T 34's. The Soldbuch had an outstanding Black Panzer Wrapper photo with the young soldier displaying undeniable Eastern European facial features. I wonder who has that little gem today...

Extra notations such as those on page 22 of your Soldbuch are always a nice bonus. One of the non-Hunde SS Soldbuchs I sold a few years ago did not have the diary type of entires entries that your set exhibits, but did contain the names / home addresses of various other POW's, and most interestingly, the names / home addresses of three of this SS fellow's English Guards while he was interned in England as a POW.

Again, nice set you have there...

            Hello Dogtag,

Very interesting group you have there.

But let me ask you one thing, how do you know he was a Polish and not a Polish Volksdeutsche?
I couldn't find which Volksliste number was listed to, did you see it somewhere?

There where many Volksdeutschen with Polishized surnames in Poland and in Germany as well (see for istance Von den Bach-Zelewski).

Well, look at character of "diary" in this document. He was Polish. Besides he returned to Poland.
Return to Poland in 1947 wouldn't be a good idea for "Polish Volksdeutsche" ....

                Hi Ohlau -

Thank you for posting this interesting set.

There might be a possibility for further research on this man. As the Poles who served in the German military during the war were discharged from the POW camps and returned to Poland, were they trusted by the new Polish government? Is it possible that the MBP, as I believe the secret police was known between 1945 and 1954, maintained surveillence on this man?Might he have a file in the Polish archives?

                Good luck with your research!

                Best regards,

                George

                  Hello,

                  Thanks for replying.

Do you mean because is written in Polish?
Wouldn't Polish Volksdeutschen been able to write in Polish as well?
                  I thought they spoke a German-Polish slang..

By the way, returning from where?
I don't speak Polish, so, I can't read; where this guy was on 08.05.1945?

George, nice to see you here!

                    Hello George,

No they were not trusted by the new Polish government. And yes, it is possible, that MBP could known story of his duty. Many people like this guy, (also soldiers from Polish Forces from West ) after retur were arrested and sentenced to prison. File in Polish archives ? Why not, who know....case for research.

T.K , you are right that volksdeutchen spoke in German/Polish. But this guy was Polish, this diary's text is truly Polish. I dont't think that real volksdeutch wanted return to Polish after war, especially in 1947 - Volksdeutchen was recognised as traitors, and were judged by courts (death sentence wasn't nothing special).

                    I also can't read where he was on 8.05. 1945;
I can tell you (from what I see in his diary) he left Leros Island on 7.06.1945 and next day arrived in Alexandria. Next place was camp for prisoners "El-Daba", as he wrote....

                      Thanks.
With 08.05.45 I meant where the guy was at the end of the war of course.

A Pole on Leros should not be too surprising. During 1944 they were serving in some numbers with the Heer in France as well.

                            Ok Guys,
The guy was Polish who was forced to sign Volksliste as most of the Poles in Wehrkreis XX. Otherwise he would perhaps find himself in Stutthof as this was a common practice. I've got some other documents from him both pre and post war.

p.s. in his diary he mentions that he arrived to POW camp in El Daba with a group of 215 Poles.
                            What a merry bunch :-)

                              .. very nice wehrpass!
In September 1944, in my grandfather's house (in the hills of Rimini) are hiding two Polish deserters from the Wehrmacht (probably with the 278 Inf. Div.), and after the war one of them came back to say hello from Canada....
