Nice awards no idea of unit!

Here's one that I picked up recently to Maschinenobergefreiter Karl Wagner.

His dog tag indicates that he joined the Kriegsmarine in 1941 as ET - Technical Career (technische Laufbahn).

Although not marked on the cover or first page, this is a replacement Soldbuch from 25.9.1943, issued by 1 Schiffsmaschinenausbildungsabteilung der Kriegsmairne.
He subsequently served with Marine Stammabteilung Oslo and Hafenschutz Flottille Drontheim renamed 7.7.1944 to 64 Vorposten Flottille based in Drontheim and Hysnes, Norway.

His awards however, were all awarded prior to the Soldbuch being issued and as such no idea what unit he belonged to!

    5.8.1942 Russian Front Medal
    6.11.1942 Iron Cross 2nd Class
    30.12.1942 Crimea Shield
3.2.1943 Romanian Crusade Against Communism Medal with Silver Bar "Marea Neagra"
    6.7.1943 Wound Badge in Black
    13.5.1943 General Assault Badge.

The last award entered by FP Nr. 35650 - Kommandant der Seeverteidigung von Drontheim.

Interestingly, just researching his awards I found the Marea Neagra Bar was only awarded to members of the Kriegsmarine and is Romanian for Black Sea which of course fits in with his other awards in the Crimea!

    /Ian

        Nice pick up Ian,

In particular I like the detail you noted about the Romanian Crusade Against Communism Medal with Silver Bar "Marea Neagra"

        Great piece.

Thanks but I have info on the units he served with, the problem is I have no idea what unit he served with when he won his awards!

              Regards,
              Ian

One thing's for sure, he didn't get any of those awards whilst serving in Trondheim!

That's an interesting detail... He would have had to have won that award (Marea Neagra bar) while serving in the KM, and as the GAB was awarded shortly after............. could it be possible he was subordinate or attached to a Heer unit for a short period of time which resulted in the award of the GAB through that (Heer) unit, but was entered into his SB through the Kommandant der Seeverteidigung von Drontheim afterwords? How else could he have received this award?

Has anyone seen another GAB entry in a KM Soldbuch to a KM member who served with a KM unit before and after the date of the award?

You sure do find the interesting pieces, Ian... Nice one indeed!!!

I have one who served with the Snellboot and then issued a Inf.Sturmabz. and a Nahkampfabz .before he was wounded while serving with a Heer Inf. Rgt. and then was issued the Verw.abz. in schwarz when he was in a KM schule later on.

The Soviets carried out several amphibious operations in the black sea\sea of Azov area in early 43. Those ports attacked will have had a KM presence and the personnel present will have been pressed into combat as alarm units.
