    Battle Damaged Dog Tag, unusual variant...

    Hello to all!
    I like to share with you this new acquisition, coming from the Pampali area in Latvia according to the seller's words.
    It belonged to a member of the 11th replacement Bataillon and this soldier came from the Wehkreis IV.
    This bataillon provided replacements for the following units:

    Stäbe: Landesschützen-Kommandeur 1; 6. Armee; 10. Armee; 14. Infanterie-Division; 294. Infanterie-Division; Feldkommandantur 512; Ortskommandantur 687; Ortskommandantur 688; Feldkommandantur 750; Ortskommandantur 780; Ortskommandantur 781;

    Infanterie-Regimenter: 11;

    Grenadier-Regimenter: 11; 53;

    Wach-Bataillone: 602; 609;

    (Thanks to Antonio for the above info...)

    I always asked to myself if it would be possible to know the soldier's name starting from his ID Tag number.....

      I think battle damaged dog tags are one of the most dramatic relics that can be found.
      As far as I know only the Deutsch Dienststelle in Berlin can decode the tags, and I dont think they like to cooperate with collectors. I saw that some people manage to get them decoded somehow, but have not managed to find out how. Apparently it is a secret and nobody wants to kill the hen with golden eggs by posting the solution on the forum...

        I agree with you, Jean Loup, and this is a real great pity due I couldn't imagine to how many forgotten soldiers would it be possible to give a name....

          If you find a body with the tag, then they will decode it of course!

            During ten years we found a lot of German soldiers ( some five - six hundreds) in Kurland....also in Pampali district. All of them, together with ID tags, awards and other stuff were given to Deutsche Dienststelle....but up to this time they don't tell us the personal data.

                  Good that you give the body´s and EKM´s to the Dienststelle, great job!
