Does that mean he didn't fight at all?

Or do you just mean he had very limited combat time in Russia. So, he was wounded in Russia and then was able to go on to fight on the mediterranean coast

Define 'fight'. It's impossible to say. He could have been wounded in a bayonet charge or while having a cup of coffee eight miles behind the front. However, his training and subsequent postings will lean you towards being in the company train.

He was stationed on coastal defence duties before he went to Russia. This would have been the south of France...as you probably know there were no landings there in May 1943. Similarly, while he was in the Crimea there were no Soviet operations launched against it.

        Hi,
just out of curiosity i typed my grandfathers name in Google and here i arrived.

He died some 20 years ago. And all I know are childhood memories.
He told that he had been riding kind of horse carriage to the front lines to bring supplies in the Krim area (black sea penninsula. As far as I remember he was shot at and in hospital at the and of the war. Than in the US as prisoner of war. I remember him telling about working on a farm there and that he would have liked to stay there.
But he had 4 sons. His eldest died as a kid in a war bombing and the second is my dad.

How did you get this documents. Could you mail me the pictures ?
I am just interested to learn some more about his life as a young man, my memories are from his 70ties and early eighties.

        yours,
        Tom

The soldiers name isn't mentioned once in this thread (unless I have missed something, in which case I apologise) so how would a Google search using his name bring you here?

            Kevin,

I think maybe he's referring to the name in Gary's post (#29)? I thought the same thing you did after reading that last post and had to go back check myself!

If it is Gary's old Wehrpass, perhaps Gary can put him in touch with its new "owner"

You actually raise a good point, as the soldier mentioned in Gary's post was KIA - so it can't be his (tomkins) Opa as he says he was a POW and died about 20 years ago!

Good question. Why would MILITARYMAN1000 be asking for information and linking it to this thread? Very confusing

I am basicly interested to learn more about my grandfather and: its his birthday, his birthplace, his profession.
