      Hi Mike,

For the most part, the number an Ersatz unit supplied troops to the field Regiment of the same number, although a good portion of them, especially Infanterie/Grenadier units, apparently supplied 2 or more field units- 'The Replacement Army' states that yours, for example, supplied Grenadier Regiments 485 and 546 (389. Infanterie Division). To what extent replacements were 'shared' I really have no idea, so I just generally default to the same number.

          Hi Mike,

You're quite welcome- happy to help. It's hard to say whether 'ST' stands for 'Stammkompanie' or 'Stab' (Staff)- I'm more inclined to believe that it's 'Stab', rather than 'Stammkompanie', as the latter seems to be more usually written out at least as 'Stamm. kp.'- possibly so as to not be confused with 'Stabskompanie'. I have a disc marked 'ST./ J. R. 48' that I would expect is rather more likely 'Stab' than 'Stammkompanie' as I'm not eve sure a field unit would have a Stammkompanie...

The references I use are 'The German Army Order of Battle: The Replacement Army, 1939-1945' Madej, W. Victor, ed., (out of print, I believe) for listings of all the Ersatz units and the field units they supplied, Tessin's multi-volume set of all the Wehrmacht units (in German, and very expensive) and Jean Höidal's book 'Erkennungsmarken des Zweiten Weltkrieges' (in German, and available)

I'll agree with Matt in that ST. would not typically stand for "Stamm", but rather usually "Stab". Most commonly Stamm but also.... ST. also stands for Sturm or Staffel, but I have never seen it for Stamm.

            Cheers,
