    Soldbuch Pz Rgt 5 Afrika

Hi, A soldbuch for a man who was captured in Afrika. I think between 1-1-42 and 30-3-42. On page 9 is an entry for a typhus shot and Kairo is written. Must be a German doctor using his skills in the British camp.

A lot of pages missing . I only scanned what had anything stamped or wrtitten on it.

On page 20 the last entry is signed by a company commander but I can't decipher what is written after , 2 komp. Div. ?

So he was a POW in Alberta Canada during, and after the war. Very interesting.

                      I read:

                      "2. Komp. Div(ision) Bardia"

Bardia is a placename in Lybia.

You are turning up some decent ones now Lee!

Your man, Werner Ohnesorge was in the leicht Kolonne of II Abteilung, Panzer Regiment 5, 5 leichte Panzer Division later 21 Panzer Division and as such was probably a truck driver. He arrived in Africa on 17 March 1941.

The entry for promotion to Unteroffizier could well have been done in PoW camp as there is no authorising signature on page 3, however confirmed by the letter from OKW.

The entry 2 Komp. Div.Bardia records his last Wehrsold payment was for the 10 day period 10.11.1941-20.11.1941.

November 1941 Panzergruppe Afrika was in control of the following major uits:

November 4 XXI. itialische Armee Korps.: it. Brescia, it. Pavia, it. Bologna - DAK: Festungs-Bes. Bardia, it. Division z. b. V. Afrika, 21. PD, 15. PD

                        FP Nr. 16977 - Kolonne I, Panzer-Regiment 5

                        FP Nr. 02492 - Kolonne 11, Panzer-Regiment 5

FP Nr. 26021 - Stab, leichte Flak Abteilung 841 (Destroyed May 1943 in Tunisia) (see Wehrsold/Frontzulage entry on page 20)

Of course Cairo was still in British hands 30.3.1942.

Attached diary from the Regiment history....I wonder if he was captured south-west of Tobruk?

                        /Ian
