    ID Disk :LW FLUGPLATZ NEUDORF

I just got this LW ID Disk that reads on it's edge : FLUGPLATZ KOMMANDO -A 3 / VIII NEUDORF . The disk is made of zinc , is 1-5/8-inches across , has a pin in the back , and seems to have had a yellow reflective paint at the center . Any ideas out there , where this airfield ' Neudorf ' was located and has anybody any similar ID's ??? Posted by Bernd .

NEUDORF/Silesia, 11 km WSW of Oppeln (today: Opole/Poland). It was one of the 150+ Einsatzhafen (operational airfields) build by the Luftwaffe in the late 1930's. Until 1942, it was simply called Fliegerhorst Neudorf, and then it was given a number and designated Flugplatzkommando A 3/VIII Neudorf. In April 1944 all the numbers and designations were changed again and Neudorf became Fliegerhorstkommandantur A(o) 4/VIII Neudorf. It remained operational until January 1945 when it was disbanded due to the proximity of the front along the Oder.

                Hello

Some points to ad (but there is not much to ad, because Larry says almost all)

                Fliegerhorst-Kommandantur A (o) 4/VIII

                Kommandeure:

                Maj Edmund Kraus, 1.4.44 - 15.6.44

                Maj Rudolf Unger, 15.6.44 - 12.44

Formed 1.4.44 in Neudorf bei Oppeln from Platzkommando A 3/VIII.

                Disbanded 12.44.

                Service:

                4.44 - 12.44 in Neudorf bei Oppeln under Flughafen-Bereichs-Kommando 4/VIII

                Best regards, Fronti

Coming to the disc itself. It is a kind of a pass. These were used to enter certain restricted areas or objects ( airfields, workshops, factories, warehouses, etc.) Thousands of different designs and versions exist. Usually show company logo ( or military emblem). Some times colour indicates status of the person wearing it ( worker, werkschutz, military personnel, POW, etc).
Usually pinback but quite some were worn on cord.
I believe these to be a great collecting subject, I have probably some 50 of them, but as I focus mostly on dogtags these aren't really in scope of my interest.
                  Regards
                  Al

That's very interesting, Al. I've been around this stuff (German WW II militaria) for 60 years and I have never seen or even heard of these Lw. base identification discs. They must be fairly rare and not widely collected or they would show up more often.
