Surname looks like "Saefken". I don't have an umlaut key for the "a"....

That's about right, just add "Aermeltaetigkeitsabzeichen" and you've got it. If you do a search for it here on the forum - or probably also on the net - you'll get a good idea of what it was for. Service, or qualifications at something...? Honestly, I don't know right now, maybe somebody else will help out.

As Hank has mentioned Johann Sรคfken.

The Gold chord looks like it is for Kraftfahrer der Luftwaffe or M/T drivers.

Interestingly he appears have the drivers badge of the Luftwaffe and later the Army version of the badge in Silver.....did he transfer to the Army or was this common to get the army version of the award?

While holding down the ALT key with your left hand, type 0228 in the numeric pad on the right side of your keyboard.

We got him covered, Rob! Now he won't be able to weasel out of those "a"'s with an Umlaut any more!

That is a nice SB photo of Safken wearing the tropical jacket with slip on shoulder boards and the LW flak badge.
