    Heer Soldbuch help bitte...

    I just picked up an unusual Heer Soldbuch. It's a Zweitschrift for an Obergefreiter in Gren. Erz. Batl. 457. What is odd is in his photo it looks like he's wearing the Ost Front ribbon and what APPEARS to be a Heer flak badge... but there is no mention in the soldbuch. He was also hospitalized for "wounds from a hand grenade" and he was not awarded the black wound badge (according to the Soldbuch). His equipment and medical info are WELL recorded. I have a few questions:

    1) he seems to be slavic, by his name and appearance. What nationality is his name and what city is he from? I can't read sutterlin script very well.

    2) what division was Gren. Erz. Batl. 457 a part of? I can't find it in my internet searches.

    3) is it typical for a "Zweitschrift" to leave out his awards?

            I have some second issue Wehrpass were awards have not been entered so it may be the same for Soldbuch.

            Cant help with the Stutterlin though

              Hello Mike,

              Gluche ist the name of this guy and it's a family name not so rare.

              You find 57 entries Gluche in the recent Geman phone book.

              His place of birth is a very small village named Dörndorf, Kreis (county) Oels,

              Schlesien (Silesia) part of Prussia - not far away from Breslau.

                Gerdan beat me to it! Yes, Richard Gluche.

                The stamps over the photo match that of the issuing unit on page 2. This is to be expected at that time of the war.

                The Soldbuch was issued by Grenadier Ersatz Bataillon 457 with was not a front line unit but a unit for replacements, convalescing soldiers, new recruits and trained soldiers ready for dispersal to front line units. ....incidentally it was issued by the Genesende Kompanie which is the Convalescent Company!

                As Jonathon pointed out the link shows it was stationed in Landsberg an der Warthe. It was actually part of Division Nr. 463 and originally provided replacements for 257 Infanterie Division.

                His last field unit was Feldersatz Bataillon 246 which was the Field Replacement Battalion of 246 Volksgrenadier Division, then fighting around Aachen and involved with the Ardennes offensive.

                His units and dog tag number do not indicate anything to do with Heeres Flak.....can you provide a larger scan of the photo?

                Unfortunately not too uncommon for awards not to be mentioned in the Soldbuch if it was a replacement, however if he was stopped by the Feldgendarmerie wearing awards he was not entitled to, he would expect some form of punishement if not backed up by the entry in his Soldbuch!

                Incidentally there are 9 Gluche's mentioned on the German War Graves site......none that are him!

                      I am VERY grateful to you all (sehr dankbar)!! I have a lot of fun looking these kinds of things up and solving the "mystery" of a particular soldier's service, but this one had me stumped. I wish there was a service called "Pub Pal" that allowed people to buy other people drinks and have them delivered to your home! I'd buy a few beers for each of you!

                      On the award, I agree that Infantry Assault would be the most normal award to see for a man in a unit like his, but the wreath seems thinner and the "gun" looks like it points up and to the right. The rifle points up and to the left on the Infantry assault and the wreath is a little thicker. Here's an enlarged photo:

                        Is that the Ost Medaille ribbon too? Fair point about the IAB and the direction of the gun, much clearer in the larger scan. To my eyes it seems as there are two distinct lines within the wreath.

                            What about the piping on his shoulder boards? White or red? Or would flak gunners assigned to infantry divisions wear the white piping as well?
