    HUNDE ? ID Tag

    Hello fellow members.

I have this ID tag and the only word I can figure out is "HUNDE"--dogs....and I do not even know if I am using that in the correct context...can somebody tell me what this piece says?

    Thanks a lot!

    Hunde Ers.St. XIII. A.K.
    Hunde-Ersatzstaffel (or Ersatzstelle)/XIII. Armeekorps
Canine Replacement Squadron (or Replacement Center)/XIII Army Corps

The German Army used a lot of dogs for guard duty, military police, etc.

This is a dogtag for a soldier (dog-leader) in a Hunde Ersatz Staffel.

IMO the dogtag isn`t good, because all german Hunde Ersatz Staffeln had "normal" numbers like 18 or 1 and wasn`t subject to a AK. Some Hunde Ersatz Staffeln were part of a Nachrichten-Ersatz-Abteilung. (For example: Nachrichten-Ersatz-Abteilung 1 with Hunde Ersatz Staffel 1 or Nachrichten-Ersatz-Abteilung 20 with Hunde Ersatz Staffel 20)

At last: Seems to be a new stamping set and looks like a brandnew stamping-work.

        Best regards, Fronti

          Hi Fronti:

          Thank you for your opinion.

The tag came in a small metal cigar box this week from a vet estate cleanout in NY with some other German items so in my opinion it is definately original but you are entitled to your opinion.

How you can judge the quality and depth of the stamping from the lighting of one photo is beyond me.

Perhaps you should study it to familiarize yourself with original such examples.

This is the last I have to say on this piece.

          Kindest Regards,

          John

            It is my opinion.

If you think, that this piece is good, than it is o.k.

I have studied dogtags over years and I can compare the stamping set with some 800 pieces in my collection ond with photos of circa 2000 pieces from friends and dogtag collectors all over the world.

It is only my opinion. (No offense meant.)

            Best regrads, Fronti

P.S.: The depth of the stamping isn`t important, there are other things...

Here some infos about the Hunde Ersatz Staffeln.

There were 12 Hunde Ersatz Staffeln in 13 garrisons in germany. Only one was in the area of the Wehrkreis XIII (stellvertretendes Generalkommando XIII. AK) This was the Hunde Ersatz Staffel 10 in Schwabach. Located in the "Nachrichtenkaserne" (barracks)
This was supposed to stellvertretendes Generalkommando XIII. AK (deputy general command AK XIII) It ist not the active "field" AK XIII.
All Ersatz units in WK II belonged to the Ersatzheer (Replacement forces) and never (!) to active Divisions or AK`s (Feldheer = Field Forces)
That means, that AK XIII never had a a replacement unit (No Hunde Ersatz Staffel, no Infanterie ersatz Bataillon and so on) All these Ersatz units belonged to "stellvertretendes Generalkommando XIII. AK."

Here are all Hunde Ersatz Staffeln of WW II:

Hunde Ersatz Staffel 1 Königsberg / Stablack / Domtau
              Hunde Ersatz Staffel 2 Pasewalk
              Hunde Ersatz Staffel 4 Königsbrück
              Hunde Ersatz Staffel 6 Pasewalk
              Hunde Ersatz Staffel 8 Breslau
              Hunde Ersatz Staffel 9 Hofgeismar
              Hunde Ersatz Staffel 10 Schwabach
              Hunde Ersatz Staffel 12 Pasewalk
Hunde Ersatz Staffel 17 München / Wien
              Hunde Ersatz Staffel 18 Salzburg
              Hunde Ersatz Staffel 20 Hamburg-Barßbüttel
              Hunde Ersatz Staffel 82 Magdeburg

              Best regards, Fronti

              P.S.: Forgot something...

There was the "Heeresschule für Hunde und Brieftauben" in Sperenberg (Army school for dogs and carrier pigeons)
The active "field-army" had dog-units, too. They have other names. Feldhundestaffel and Feldhundeschule. Both are Feldheer units.
              So, you can say:
In a normal (field) AK (Armee Korps) there can only be a Feldhundestaffel or a Feldhundeschule and in a stellvertretendes Generalkommando .... AK, there only could be a Hunde Ersatz Staffel.
