Luftwaffe WP / SB Unit entries help needed

    Hello All,
I've a couple of questions, perhaps someone could help me out with.
I'm researching a Luftwaffe Wehrpass / Soldbuch of a airman / telephone operator in signals unit - Lw. Stelle (mod. -Z) 17 / VI - (Feldpost number L36534) stationed in Sicily April 41 - August 41, then in Greece August 1941 till October 44. The unit was renamed in April '44 - Lw. - Stelle (mot Z) 204 /XVII from March 45 until May'45 he also had short spells in the following units
    11.3.45 – 26.3.45 6. (Lw. Ers.) / Lg Nachr. Rgt. 3
    27.3.45 – 45.45 Lw. Festungs – Nachr. Pus Kp. / Luftflo 6
I'm trying to find out exactly where he was in Sicily & Greece. I've looked through the Lexikon der Wehrmacht, unfortunately information on luftwaffe ground personnel is a little sparse. Any information would be appreciated. Can anyone help me out with this
    Regards Alec

You should try the Luftwaffe homepage:

    Fliegerhorst-Kommandantur E 17/VI - http://www.ww2.dk/ground/flibo/fk/fk17-6.html

    Fliegerhorst-Kommandantur E (v) 204/XVII - http://www.ww2.dk/ground/flibo/fk/fk204-17.html

LG.Nachr.Rgt. 3 is not listed and the last unit not sure what that is but Luftflotte 6 might help with some links http://www.ww2.dk/air/hq/lfl6.htm

      Ian,
Thanks for the reply & links, I had a look earlier through the luftwaffe pages. I hoped to, perhaps gleam a little more information by giving the Feldpost No. L36534.
      Regards
      Alec

The Felpost number corresponds exactly with the units mentioned:

        FP Nr. 36534

        (2.1.1940-27.4.1940) Fliegerhorst-Kommandantur (E) 17/VI,

        (23.4.1944-24.11.1944) 30.6.1944 Fliegerhorst-Kommandantur E 204/XVII.

          Alec -

          Lw. Stelle (mod. -Z)

I think you have what you need on these two Fliegerhorstkommandanturen regarding Sicily and Greece from the Michael Holm web site, but I would like to add that this is not Lw. Stelle (mod. Z), but rather Ln.-Stelle (mod. Z). Each Fl.H.Kdtr. had an attached Ln.-Stelle that had the same number (17/VI and then 204/XVII) as the Fl.H.Kdtr. They were not an organic component of the Fl.H.Kdtr. but rather attached to it so they could be quickly removed and transferred elsewhere if need. For an Einsatz-Horst, the Ln.-Stelle numbered about 40 to 50 personnel, but for an "A"-Horst they could number 80 or 90 personnel. The Ln.-Stelle, of course, provided signals support to the Fl.H.Kdtr.

            Larry,
Thanks for the additional in – depth information, and pointing out the Ln. error, I like / try to get details as correct as I can. One point could you clear up if you don’t mind, what’s the meaning of Z in (mod –Z). Once again thanks for your help.
            Regards Alec

I'm not sure, Alec, but I have a book here on the Luftnachrichtentruppe and I will see if I can find an answer for you.

                Hi Alec,

                You wrote:

In the above, "(mod. -Z)" appears to be incorrect and "(mot Z)" appears to be correct. Here is it's KStN:

KStN 3389 e (L) - Luftnachrichtenstelle (Mot Z) eines Einsatzhafens [Air Force Signals Station (Power Traction) of an Operational Airfield].

"(Mot Z)" means "motorisiert mit Zugkraftwagen" and was usually used to refer to something that was towed. For example, in the Heer there were:

                Inf.Gesch.Komp. (mot Z)
                Panzerjägerkompanie (mot Z)
                Haubitzebatterie (mot Z)
                Kanonenbatterie (mot Z)
                Flakbatterie (mot Z)

In that context, the towing vehicle was often a Hanomag half-track prime mover. But in the context of this Luftwaffe signals station the meaning was really a number of enclosed Luftwaffe signals trucks towing trailers.

                HTH,
