Afrika soldbuch help please
Hi,
Have a soldbuch I can't seem to accurately identify. Has an FP number 48943 A next to his Afrika entry / entry. His unit was Feld Btl. T 3 / Komp. 4.
I believe that T 3 was the designation for Division von Broich/Manteuffel.
Can anyone please ID. this soldbuch?
Thank you,

I'm not certain what you are asking for, but here is the Feldpostnummer anyway:
FpN 48943
(2.1.1940-11.3.1943) Stab u. 1.-5. Kompanie Feldersatz-Bataillon 20,
(12.3.1943-7.9.1943) gestrichen (Tunis).
Suffix "A" would have been for the Stab.
I can't identify the T 3 for you, but the "T" almost certainly stood for Tunisien. Until proven wrong, I believe "T 3" represents a packet of troops and units assembled in Sicily or southern Italy awaiting transportation to Tunisia. I have seen this method used in other theaters, such as for troops and units assembled in Baltic ports pending movement to the remote front in northern Norway and Finland. In that case, the packets were numbered N 1, N 2, N 3, etc. But I could be wrong in the case of "T 3".

T 3
Page 91. As of March 18, 1943 "T 3" = Panzergrenadier Batl. (mot). T3, under Pzr.Grn. Rgt. 160 - Division von Manteuffel.Last edited by MilitaryCollect; 12-08-2007, 08:17 AM.

T 3
Hey fellas,
Thanks for the info. I've found a couple units bearing the specific designation "T3", related to Afrika. I believe "T" = Tunisia, and the number 3 identifies a specific unit. Below is a couple exerpts from the Bender & Law book: Uniforms, Organization and History of the Afrikakorps, pp. 90-91, (ISBN: 0-912138-09-2).
According to Bender & Law, "T 3" appears to have been a unit designation under Division von Broich, later renamed Division von Manteuffel. Below,"T 3" relates to Infantrie-Btln. T 3. In March, 43' "T 3" = Panzergrenadier Batl. (mot). T3, under Pzr.Grn. Rgt. 160 within Division von Manteuffel.
The FP number appearing to his Afrika entry / entry does not correspond to the B & L designations. May be these units were taken from "T 3" - the packet of troops assembled on the continent for deployment in Afrika?

Tessin says:
Infanterie-Rgt. T
Formed winter 1942-43 in Tunis(?), probably from native volunteers, with Feld-Btl. T 1, T 2, T 3. Disbanded following the surrender in Tunis.
So, somewhat surprisingly, these were actual units with unusual numbering.
This required some digging in Tessin because he does not show of discuss the composition of Division von Manteuffel. He only says the Division was formed 11.2.43 in Africa by renaming Division von Broich, and then disbanded following the surrender in Tunis.
