    Discs: Blood type?

I have noticed, well how could you not, that many discs do not have a blood type stamped on them.

In general, is there a reason for this?

    I was also wondering...

Did stamping the blood type come into effect before, early or late in the war? Or did only certain replacement units stamp the discs? It looks as though the blood type is usually stamped on with a different font than used for the unit/ID number, so perhaps many just forgot to stamp them?

Any information/theories would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Chris,

According to Jean Hoeidal's book, a soldier's blood group letter was put on his Erkennungsmarke as standard practice in 1941, although that's not to say that no one did it before this.

As for the reason the letter is usually a different 'font' than that of the rest of the disc is because discs would be manufactured by one company, say, and the blood group letter was put on the disc when it was issued- by the unit. So the appearance was dependent on what stamps they had, and how exactly the stamper worked- that's why the depth and placement is often very different.

SS and Luftwaffe coded discs are a little different. I've seen LW discs both with and without a blood group letter, and there was a practice in the SS of tattooing a soldier's blood group under his left (I think) arm, so it wasn't always necessary on his Erkennungsmarke.

also remeber that at the time when a soldier got into the army and got his disc- maybe his bloodtype was not yet known (hadnt been at the doctors) and then later there was just no possibility to get it stamped- or no need to .
thats exactly the case with me- after 2 years active and 1 year reserve service there is still no blood type stamp on my disk- just hadnt the time to let it be stamped (not all unit have or have hada stamping kit also..)
