    SS-Dog Tag - opinion, please

    Gentlemans,
How you think, this dog tag good, or not?
I think, what it not the original, but, probably, I am mistaken?

    Stb. I/.Gal.SS-Freiw.Regt.5
    (Pol) 18 Fw

    Thanks.
    Igor.

Igor, I don't think this tag is any good. The research I did regarding such tags made me conclude that all of originals did not use runes but had SS stampled out with letters instead.

P.S. I sent you an email (to your ostbat site adress) regarding another SS Galicia tag yesterday - check your mail and let me know what you think.

      Hello Askold,
I don't know if this tag is ok or not ( Hard to say as the picture is rather blurry) however I need to dissagree when it comes to runes. Runes are absolutely correct in case of tags used by 4th & 5th SS Gal Pol regiments.
I have personally found 3 tags of rgt 4 at Tr.Ub.Pl. Neuhammer few years ago. and they definitely have runes. The same with the tag of 5th rgt recovered by my friend just recently.
BTW Ostbat does your tag have Bl.Gr. stamped on reverse? And is the tag itself made of thin ( polizei issue) or standard zinc sheet?
      Rgds

Hello Al, I think there is a big difference between Galicia division and Galician SS police regiments. The ss police units wore different uniforms and trained in different places - perhaps this could explain the runes on the dog tag. I spoke to people who done digs at Brody (where Galicia div. wad decimated) and they said that only dog tags with SS in letters were found.

              Askold,
that's for sure. 14.SS Div tags have no runes ( at least the ones I have or have seen). Polizei regimenter are different and definitely have runes.
My polizei tags also have Fw instead of Frw.
Ok, if this tag comes from ebay - everything is pretty clear it's a fake made in Poland ( oh what a shame again ).
              Regards
              Al

No the tag does not come from Poland, and it has SS stampled out in letters not runes. The problem that I have is that it comes from Flak regiment 14. Most of Galicia division tags that I've seen come from that unit. The tag reads Stb. Bttr. /SS - Frw. Art. R. 14 (personal number 138). I was told my Mr. Melnyk (author of a book on Galicia division) that they were sold in Britain trough Regimentals in 1990's. The owner told him he had as many as 200 of those and that they came from a whole Flak unit that was decimated at Brody. Could they be those fake ones from Poland? The Russian diggers I've talk to swear that such Flak tags are original.

P.S. Did you ever get any other Galicia divsion unit tags or just Flak? If so, what other units?

The tag featured is for Galician SS police regiment, which was later incorporated into Galicia division.
