SS FP from Gotenhafen (part 2)

I apologize for the confusion in the titles of my posts. I was trying to resize this scan as I was submitting the other FP numbers.

I have attached a scan of one of the FP I have from this individual. In this case, the FP was sent directly to his address. All of the correspondence, to and from, use the same SS FP type card. I would appreciate your help in determining the role of this individual (his title is "Meister"), and the type of unit he was assigned to in Gotenhafen. Thanks a lot! Bill

Meister der Gendarmerie was one rank below Leutnant der Gendarmerie, so it probably equated to the most senior of NCO ranks or, more likely, a chief warrant officer, that odd rank between NCO and commissioned officer. The Gendarmerie were the rural police, so he would have been with the local town and village police in and around the Gotenhafen area. Our equivalent in the U.S. would be a county sheriff's department and/or the local cops in a suburb. If Gotenhafen had a city police force, then they would be Schutzpolizei (municipal police) rather than Gendarmerie. Do you know where Gotenhafen is?

This is all very elementary information and easily found on the internet, including this web site. You might want to try using the SEARCH function here, on other Axis WW II sites, and using Google for more information if you are interested. It is truly amazing what can be found without the need to ever buy a book.

Best wishes in your new endeavor,

Thank you for the explanation of the Gendarme. I am still confused as to why they would SS FP for correspondence. The FP also included a "5a" and a "3 Komp". I made the assumption that this referred to a military organization.

Ref the location of Gotenhafen: It appears as if Gotenhafen (AKA Gdynia) was a primary port for U Boats and large surface vessels and is located along the Baltic Coast.

Gotenhafen: right you are. Gotenhafen was the naval base in the harbor at Gdingen (Gdynia).

The Gendarmerie was a component of the Ordnungspolizei and was organized along military lines. Many units of the Gendarmerie were also motorized and called upon to serve in the occupied territories. As a component of the Ordnungspolizei, the Gendarmerie came under the overall command of the SS.

The "5a" is a postal routing number, I believe.
