    Hello,

    Christopher, according to Tessin :

ASR 963: regiment dissolved on February 23, 1943. II. battalion, the holder of your Wehrpass
of which been a part, was transferred to the ASR 962 and becomes III. ASR 962. This battalion was not sent in Africa and is reappointed II. Fest. Inf. Btl. 999 in June, 1943. No registration on your Wehrpass on the page 12 after ASR 963 ? What is it the registration in red on the page 1 (I do not manage to decipher it) ?

The Sturm-Division Rhodos has never carried a number, only Sturm-Division Rhodos.

After the Wehrpass ASR 963 of Christopher, the Wehrpass ASR 962 of Yancy, here is an interesting group : Soldbuch and Wehrpass ASR 961 then Afrika Division 999 then Fest. Inf. Btl. 999 and finally Pz. Gren. Brigade Rhodos.

    Wehrpass page 12

    Cordial greetings.

            Hi,

No entries on page 12 after 8./Afrika Schutz - Rgt. 963.

The writing in red on page 1 is very blurry. From what I can make out, it states: wehrstammansig ???? lossen

                        Hello,

Here are some pix from a s/b of a member of Pioneer-battalion 999 (Rgt961). He arrived in Afrika on March 21, 1943 (page 19) and surrendered with his unit on May 10. He was awarded the German-Italian Afrika medal (page 22) and became a POW of the French on May 11.

If it were a penal unit; i.e., purely punishment purposes, I do not believe he would have received an award. I believe Dal was correct in his assessment of the 999 Afrika Leichte Division, the last division to arrive in Afrika in late March 1943, when he stated this unit "made up mainly of rank and file German soldiers who had been court martialled and had been given a chance to redeem themselves by service to this special division. It was not a penal unit, and the officers and NCOs were drawn from normal training schools and replacement drafts."

Dal McGuirk, Rommel's Army in Africa, page 48.

                        Christopher
