Hello,
Here is a WP, assignment order & Arbeitsdienstbuch for a former member of the 999 Afrika Leicthe Division, Regiment 963. I've been informed that the 963 rgt. did not actually go to Afrika, but was assigned as a garrison elsewhere. The 961 & 962 regiments were sent to Afrika and saw very heavy fighting there.

It's 963 Afrika-Sch******252;tzen-Regiment was transferred to Greece from Sicily before ever reaching North Afrika. This unit went on to become the nucleus of Sturm-Division Rhodos (aka 440.Sturm-Div.Rhodos) in May 1943, with the accompanying 999. unit designations intact. After the surrender of the 999.Leicth-Afrika-Division, the Divisional replacement Ersatz u.Ausbildungs organization located at its home station of Heuberg, continued to process potentially redeemable criminal and political prisoners from the various Wehrmachtstrafslager for replacement positions within other Heer units.

Thanks for the interesting info the the 999 Inf Div. I understood from Paul Carrell's book "Foxes of the Desert" that it was a penal unit. Back in the 70's I purchased a German camo helmet - painted kind of orange with the white letters P E painted on the front. I purchased it from an arab import/ export guy. I have always assumed it ties back to the 999 Inf Div. and that the letters P E indicate probatione einheit (probationary or penal unit). Does that make sense? Thanks RichComment

The enlisted guys were not well thought of whereas the officers and nco's were deemed reliable.
Am looking for any reference to "PE" in relation to this unit in the field. The rank and file did not national symbols on their uniforms / headgear such as a breast eagle, collar litzen, cap eagle or cockade. Moreover, the belt buckle was devoid of "Gott mit uns" and the swaz.
I wonder if it was painted orange after the war and used as some type of a safety helm on an oil field. What does the the orange paint look like? The French oil companies were all over North Africa after the war. In fact, the infamous lost B-24 & crew were discovered by a French petroleum exploration team.
In French, "petroleum drilling" is translated as: le Pétrole Entraîne; and his safety helm: le casque de sûreté pour entraîner de pétrole.
