      This is extremely common for KIA's. It basically gives the next-of-kin a better pension.

          You are reasonable to assume that your KIA Major was due for promotion since Major is too junior to command a Regiment on a permanent basis, hence the title Regimentsfuehrer versus Regimentskommandeur. However, there is no reason for his promotion to have been tied to the arrival of a replacement since he could just have well have remained in that position upon his promotion. The fact that he was to be replaced by a second Major suggests a continuing shortage of officers in the correct grade.

          I see two scenarios for his promotion:
          - scheduled for transfer and promotion>>>killed>>>promotion allowed to proceed
          - scheduled for transfer (for good or bad reason)>>>killed>>>recommended for posthumous promotion
