Two POW documents identifying unit information.

1) Camp transfer doc. dated 1947 in which the soldier/POW stated that he was a member of 71 Rgt. 1.A. L.K. Nebelwerfer at the time of hs capture.

Does anyone know what division or gruppe the 71st Rgt. was assigned?

DAK nebelwerfer soldbuch & doc.'s - Help please

Hello,

Here is a recently acquired DAK grouping. This artillery man arrived in Afrika on January 6, 1943. There is an entry dated March 11, 1943 which bears the stamp of Arty. Rgt. 190.

However, there is an entry in a POW document dated 1947 in which he wrote that he was a member of the 71 Rgt., 1.A. L.K. Nebelwerfer at the time of his capture in Tunisia. His POW index card indicates that his FP number at the time of his capture was FP# 27603.

Can anyone please ID his unit (division, gruppe, or?)

FP Nr. 27603 belonged to Kolonne I Werfer-Regiment 71 (Tropen).

Can't tell you much about it at the moment except it was formed 13.11.1942 from Werfer Abteilung 9 and 71 with two Abteilungen. I. (old 9 was actually redisignated 20.1.1943) and II. (old 71) and were destroyed in Tunisia in 1943.
I believe it was Heerestruppen (Army Troops) in Africa and would have come under DAK. No doubt at some time for local admin etc. it could have been attached to Artillerie Regiment 190.

FP Nr. 05844 belonged to Ortskommandantur (II) 959, destroyed 1943 in Tunisia.

Nice little group.....nice to see the PoW documents as these tended to be thrown away...unfortunately not many of the US ones exist only his British!

The entry you can not make out is:

According to H.V. Blatt B 1941/496 entitled to wear the Arm stripe (cuff title) "Afrikakorps".

"71 Rgt., 1.A. L.K. Nebelwerfer" - I think what they are referring to here is misinterpreted from I. to 1!!! It is leicht Kolonne, I. Ateilung, Nebelwerfer Regiment 71.

The entry on page 11 doesn't mean he started his tropical service on that date, only that he was found medically fit for tropical duty. Nice qroup!

Soldbuch Nebelwerfer Regiment 71 / Tunisia 1943

Here is some more interesting info on Nebelwerfer Regiment 71. It was part of Artillery-Regiment 190 / 90th Leichte Afrika-Division. Can anyone please discuss with which unit(s) leicht Kolonne, I. Abteilung, Nebelwerfer Regiment 71 had fought?

The 90th Leichte Division was created in August 1941 as Division zbV Africa, from units already in Africa under the control of Divisions-Kommando z.b.V. Afrika. Renamed as 90th Light Infantry Division in November 1941, and then to 90th Light Africa Division in March 1942.

I found two major, independent units which had assigned to them nebelwerfers from Arty. Rgt. 190 (Werfer-Regiment 71 (Trop.)).

The first is Kampfgruppe DAK which was formed on February 10, 1943. The Order of Battle for Kampfgruppe DAK included:

Kampfgruppe DAK:

a) Stab DAK;
b) Panzer-Grenadier-Regiment Afrika (previously titled Sonderverband 288 / 90th Leichte Afrika-Div.);
c) Luftwaffen-Jager-Brigade 1 (previously titled Ramcke Parachute Brigade);
d) Stab, I./Artillerie-Regiment Afrika 1;
e) I./Artillerie-Regiment 190 (90th Leichte Afrika-Div.) -
three Battererien/Werfer-Regiment 71 (trop.).

Kampfgruppe DAK (formed Feb. 10, 1943) had its first engagement against Gafsa in the battle of Sidi bou Zid. (See below). On February 17, 1943, Oberst von Liebenstein was wounded and Generalmajor Bulowius assumed command.

Division Hermann Goring

The H.G. Division also had nebelwerfer unit(s) from Art.-Rgt. 190 (Werfer-Regiment 71) in North Afrika. The H.G. Division order of Battle as of March 13, 1943 included:

a) I. & III./ Jager-Regiment Hermann Goring (formerly Ramcke Parachute Brigade / Fallschirmjager Regiment 5);
b) II./Artillerie-Regiment 190 (90th Leichte Afrika-Div.) -

The H.G. Division order of Battle as of April 4, 1943 included:

a) I. & III./ Jager-Regiment Hermann Goring;
b)II./Artillerie-Regiment 190 -
2./Werfer Abteilung 1

He was with Art.-Rgt. 190 / I Abt./Nebelwerfer-Regiment 71 and therefore may well have been attached to the infamous H.G. division (I. & III./Jager-Regiment Hermann Goring).

The H.G. Division commander was Generalmajor Josef Schmid. H.G. units in North Afrika were also known as Gruppe Schmid. This Gruppe was formed on February 25, 1943, and consisted of three independent, unter groups, including Gruppe Koch.

Kampfgruppe Koch was previously formed around December 1, 1942 and included Fallschirmjager-Rgt. 5 (commanded by Oberstleutnant Koch, KC holder) which was later renamed "Jager-Regiment Hermann Goring".

Brigade Ramcke / Fallschirmjager-Rgt. 5

Formed in 5.42, Stab and I./FJR.5 new, II. and III./FJR.5 from II. and III./Luftlande-Sturm-Regiment 1. In 7.42 II./FJR.5 was sent to Africa and joined Brigade Ramcke, while the rest of the regiment transferred to Reims (training for Operation Hercules, attack om Malta). Stab, I. and III./FJR.5 were transferred to Tunisia in November 1942, joining Brigade Ramcke. II./FJR.5 was apparently disbanded shortly afterwards. On 2.43 FJR.5 was redesignated J******228;ger-Regiment Hermann G******246;ring, now part of Hermann G******246;ring Division.
