SS Erkennungsmarke

Greetings,

Thanks in advance to those the view this post.

As stated I have a Erkennungsmarke that is marked as follows and not knowing anything about German Units wanted to know if this was to a soldier in the 6th SS Panzer which from my small research took part in the Battle of the Bulge.

I have double checked the unit# and it clearly shows 6 on one half and a faint /6 on the other half

SS-Pz. Gren. Ers.Btl.6

Well Mark, that's SS-Panzergrenadier-Ersatz-Bataillon 6, but I find no listing for this unit in my reference.

Thanks for replying to my post. A thing that bothers me is that the tag does not have a blood type or service number. Now I am ignorant beyond belief when it comes to German militaria but all the tags that I have seen had such information noted. Could it be a fake or repo?

I would post a scan but I seem to remember that you have to be a $$ contributer to post as such? I apologize if that statement is incorrect.

Hi Mark,

No serial number? Well units could have kept partially-stamped discs around and would just stamp blocks of serial numbers on them as they were needed, and that would fit with the lack of a blood group too. It's the lack of a listing for the unit that bothers me.

You can't post images directly, but all you need to do is post stuff on ImageShack or Photobucket- two online image hosts- and put a link to it in your posting.

Here is a scan of the SS tag. As you can see it is well worn. I tried my best on the scan but i think you can make out the SS on the left and the 6 on the far right

Just from the couple of letters I can see, I have a sneaking suspicion it's a common fake type. The 'r' especially is quite characteristic. That would fit with there being no reference listing for the unit- fakers often make discs for units that never existed.
