Hi,
On the first page of this thread I've read, that fotos in SB were often added (or same SB are missing of those). Was it possible that the foto was later added by the soldier (i.e. the Soldbuch was issued without the foto?)?

Wehrpass will always have a photograph, but Soldbuch may well not have.
It was not a mandatory requirement for photos in Soldbuch until late in the war, many never had a photo of the owner issued and those which have are probably in the minority - and less desireable; it is good to have a photo of the owner to put "a face to the name" as we say in England.

Orders went out in 1943 to put a photo in the Soldbuch of Heer, SS and Luftwaffe men. Kriegsmarine Soldbuch were issued with them from 1941.
To have a Lufwaffe pilots Soldbuch for example who was killed in 1942, you would not see a photo. However from April/May 1944 I would really expect to see one in the Soldbuch of pilot who was still living by then!

However to quote John, Wehrpass do not always have a photo either, particularly if it is a replacement and/or if the person was killed in action and a new one was drawn out.

Hi,
I've posted this question because I have a Soldbuch issued on September 1944. There's also photo with those round stamps with eagles but there are no stamps on the Soldbuch itself. So I was certainly added later (maybe by the soldier). So I've wondered if this Soldbuch could be issued without the photo and the photo was added later.

It could have been added by the soldier himself or it could have been added by the seller to get more money!
Difficult to say sometimes, however page 2 has a brief description so you may be able to tell if that is a match....also rank, awards, time of promotion and date of issue of awards can help if they are shown or being worn in the photo.

Hi,
Well, here it is.
I don't think that it could be added by the seller. In fact the seller was not aware in which unit this soldier served (well, to be accurate he even didn't know what kind of document he's selling). The price was rather attractive as for this kind of unit

Sorry to say it, but I don't like those two stamp-parts on that photo, no idea when the photo went into your Soldbuch, but how those two stamp- parts are done is pure postwar fantasy.

3 or 4 years ago, I voted, without hesitation for Wehrpass, for the following reasons.
- I collect Rimini or Gothic Line entry and pages 32 of the wehrpass (campaigns and battles, is fantastic to find sometimes 3 pages of battle!) ) or 34 (the place where the soldier was wounded or fell) have no equivalent in the Soldbuch (even if from the dates in the Soldbuch is not diffcult to go back).
- condition! it is just a matter of taste (such as music or football or food) but I am a maniac of "mind conditions" and I do not like is the documents with stains, discolored from water, crumpled, torn, with the cover repaired with gummed paper or Patches, with missing or loose pages, without photos or with holes etc etc.... and unfortunately Soldbuch are generally more consumed than wehrpass
- the wehrpass are also more immediate in the annotations and records: the units and battles are lined up in a straight sequence so the military career can be seen easily without cross out or lines of erasure.
- most Wehrpass are slightly cheaper (perhaps only because they are less required)
for me (but let's stay on personal taste) there is not much difference whether a Wehrpass or Soldbuch have stayed here, near my home, closed in a jacket pocket of a soldier, or in the wooden box of quartermaster of his cCmmand......
while a signature or an autograph excite me much more, and with this I begin with the points that make me, after this time, like getting the Soldbuch (if in good condition);
- Uniform photo
- I am also a collector of weapons and I like to read Soldbuch the weapon used by the soldier
- usually there are more feldpost, stamps and signatures in the Soldbuch; the Wehrpass duplicates in particular are often just written, while Soldbuch duplicate (I also like the duplicates if they cost the right) there is always at least the stamp, the signature and the check of unit that issued its....
and the conclusion is that I like more and more together, and today I would vote for bot.

For me its the WP.
Not that i dont like SB also but im a condition freak and alot of the time the WP are in better shape for obvious reasons.
That said,i have a couple of nice cndition SBs also

Among the Soldbuecher, my favourites ones are the Luftwaffe versions.
The transfer entries are usually dated (like on the Wehrpaesse), and this fact helps a lot to decipher the career of the soldier
