        Books

Probably the first thing you should do is get some books and do some reading. While wehrpasses and soldbuchs have not been dinked with as much as some other collectibles, there are instances where information has been "added" to make the book more appealing and of course more expensive. You don't need to make mistakes. Take a run at google, Manions, ebay, and the like to see if you can get a copy of Emilie Caldwell Stewart's books on them as well as her documents book. If you really run into trouble locating a copy, let me know. I may have an extra copy somewhere in my library. Now we're not talking expensive reference volumes. All 3 of her books (and there are others that I can direct you towards if I take the time to get out and open one of my cabinets) are paperback, privately printed, and won't set you back much at all.

Think about what you want. Soldbuchs come for all the various service types. Are you Wehrmacht, Kriegsmarine, Luftwaffe, SS, Gestapo-- Afrika Korps, Gebrigsjager-- and on and on. Do you wanty personalities? Knight's Cross? German Cross in Gold? Antipartisan? Officer? Enlisted? -- and on and on. Get a feel for your direction before you go out grabbing at every possibility. That will in retrospect make you a lot happier with your collection as you grow with it.

Lastly, you'll find a number of people who will be willing to help get you started. Some will help with information. Some will help with stuff to sell you. But there is help.

Good luck. You're entering an area of great interest and enjoyment. Unlike namelss edged weapons, these are identity pieces that bring a person to life. I wish you good hunting and success without many mistakes.

advice to a beginner, get every paybook checked by an expert before you shell out any cash.
These days many, many paybooks have been dicked with and are dodgy.
