        SS Panzer

        Hello Martin,
In regards to authenticity, looks like an original. Compared to my ground-dug SS Panzer dogtag (same one you have), the letters seem to be positioned correctly. If you require any pictures, I will postsome on later.

Although fairly obvious, I'll just point out that this is for a member of SS-Panzer-Grenadier-Ausbildungs-Bataillon 18 of the 18.SS-Freiwilligen-Panzer-Grenadier-Division "Horst Wessel". A possible problem- in most (I think ALL) cases, such a unit was designated "SS-Panzer-Grenadier-Ausbildungs- und Ersatz-Bataillon" (Training & Replacement Battalion), which would be abbreviated "SS-Pz.Gren.Ausb.u.Ers.Btl.", but perhaps they omitted "u.Ers." to conserve space on the disk. I'm not an ID disk guy, so forgive my ignorance if this was common practice.

Well it became AuE Btl by 1.4.45. In period of 15.4.44-1.4.45 There were 2 separate units Ersatz Btl and Ausbildungs Btl. So it's possible that the tag is ok, especially that Ausbildungs Batl was located in Vichy, France.

However all replacement tags I've seen come either from Feldersatz or SS Pz.Gren. Ersatz Bataillon 18 and are stamped with totally different typeface.
              But never knows....
              All best
              Al
p.s. I will try to post pic of my Pz.Gren.Ers.Btl.18 tag here soon

Nice tag then. Looks like zinc plated steel. Or am I wrong and it is a zinc one?
Let me know if you would get bored with it .

Hope this question does not sound idiotic.......How do you tell it's zinc plated steel? Is it the weight? I have two SS ID Disks, both non-magnetic, but one is heavier than the other. It also has an olive sort of look to the color, where the other is obviously zinc. I assumed it was zinc plated steel even though non-magnetic, did I assume correct?

Well, I guess zinc plated tag should be magnetic. The fact that one tag is heavier than the other can be explained by difference in zinc sheet thickness.
Or maybe you have an alu tag? Attach some pictures and I will try to say something.

Oh, one more thing - there is characteristic "frost" effect on all zinc galvanized items. Pure zinc does not have it.
                            Hope this helps
                            Al

.zinc plated steel :The disk is steel, covered with a tiny zinc layer what allow better one protection against the corrosion and the disk is magnetic.Am i right ?
