Hi guys,
I've just been told that apparently the introduction of 5- and 6-digit codes for LW flying and Fallschirmjäger units was a result of an order from Göring of 17.2.1940, and that before this date identity discs were marked in plain-text. In addition, this order was recinded or relaxed for the Fallschirmjäger in mid-1944 because they weren't expected to be involved in any more combat drops. This information explains why plain-text markings can be seen on what indeed do appear to be authentic discs- can anyone comment on this order or the presence of plain-text Erkennungsmarken worn before 17.2.1940 or in the latter half of 1944? I have seen one image from a Fallschirmjäger Soldbuch that has an FJ Ersatz unit marked on the Erkennungsmarke line and not a code, so that supports the relaxing of the order late in the war. Of course one example doesn't constitute serious proof, but it's a start.
Any proof one way or the other would be of great interest
Matt
