German Cross DK - Ligt v Heavy versions

Hi guys,

I am currently looking out for a DK in gold for my son.

There are various ones advertised some lightweight some heavy what is the significance of these e.g.

What are the weight differences
When were they produced
I assume the heavier ones tend to be more collectable?
etc.

It is more than hard to sum up all your questions in just one post. A good investment would be ordering "The German Cross" by Dietrich Maerz, B&D Publishing.

The heavy ones with tombak (copper alloy) came first. Because Germany had not very much copper for the medal industry (the war industry was more important), they changed over to other materials like cupal a sandwich material from aluminium with one or two thin layers of copper.


a heavy tombak can weight up to almost 70 Gr


on the collector marked they add a bit more value to the early solid tombak pieces then the later cupal made examples.
