    Cloth EK1

    Hello all,
I didn't want to hijack Skip's thread about his printed EK1 so I hope no one minds me starting this one!

What do you all think to this cloth cross?? It is very similar to the example in Gordon's book The Iron Cross of 1939,page 136 bottom right.

    Cheers

    Dave

Check this out. From Thomas Huss. Unfortunately that swaz and date have been removed. Still I think it's a good one. Dave, I also lean towards yours as being good. The materials and craftmanship look right as does the aging. Look at the various little fibers caught in the material over time.
Yeah I think its a good one but its damn ugly! The problem is there isn't much to compare it to although the one in Gordon's book is a dead ringer for it!

              Its on its way Jim!

Anyone else have an opinion on this unusual cross?

Hi Dave, like you say it is very hard to know with any kind of certainty, as known originals are so very, very, rare. Having said that I like the appearance of this one.

                Cheers, Ade.

                  Hi Dave....

With respect to the previous contributions, I don't see how anyone can make any sort of call on a cloth item without knowing its FULL history....

Each of the cloth EK's below feature in the current EK bibles of our hobby, and are deemed authentic. Some have provenance. Can't argue with that......

But equally, if someone told me each of them had been hand embroided by my 90 year old granny on a rather bumpy flight from London - armed with what I (and I would venture a collective WE...) know about these, I simply couldn't argue with that either.

Sure, the one you've posted looks kinda like the Williamson one....but then a Floch looks kinda like a Souval.....and these outstanding reference books have inadvertantly provided the perfect template for cloth items....

I chased unprovenanced cloth EK's for a while before I realised that in addition to making a 1000 Euro leap of faith....I would have to retain a niggling imagination for the rest of my collecting years.

                  And that aint fun....
