Can anyone read this sutterlin script? I have pretty much deciphered the first line: Tischendorf, Hptm. The bottom line is tough....begins with 1. I also think I see a "Sch." in there (the second set of letters)...

Not sure what to think....it looks different each time I take a look...
1. ..g. Sch.Div.
Here are the two Tischendorf DK holders, none of the abbreviations appear to match up!
Why would he have Hauptmann on the back if he won it as an Oberfeldwebel?
Oberleutnant Rudolf Tischendorf. Flugzeugführer. 2./Aufklärungsgruppe ObdL
Ehrenpokal 01.06.42
Deutsches Kreuz in Gold 14.11.42
Oberfeldwebel Herbert Tischendorf. Panzer-Abteilung 60
Deutsches Kreuz in Gold 13.05.42
Das Ritterkreuz 11.03.45 as Hauptmann with schwere Panzer-Abteilung 509

Ian, there is actually at least one more that I found
Siegfried Tischendorf OFW 8/GR 134 21/1/43
Perhaps he inscribed the cross after it was awarded and he had been promoted? Perhaps it was a replacement...several possibilities, and the inscription was done by the soldier himself. It looks more like it was done to mark a piece of property than to commemorate the award date. I agree, the second line looks different every time I study it too. What do you think about the name? Is that translation correct?

It certainly looks like Tischendorf, however the abbreviations don't really make sense!
I see Hbg. perhaps for the first, that would be Hamburg!
then Flg....Flieger Schützen Division? Doesn't exist......

I think it is:
1. Flg.Sch.Div. - 1. Flieger Schuldivision
Our Luftwaffe man must have become an instructor or trained at this school!
Perhaps by the time he received the award he was already a Hauptmann at his new unit...?
1. Flieger-Schuldivision
Formed November 1943 from the 2. Flieger-Ausbildungs-Division (this was renamed October 1943 Höh. Kommandeur der Flugzeugführerausbildungsschulen A/B) in Göppingen (later Kempten) under Luftflotte 10. - On 8.2.1945 the Division consisted of:
15 Flugzeugführerschulen A: 2 Würzburg, 5 Gablingen, 7 Schweinfurt, 10 Warnemünde, 14 Klagenfurt, 23 Kaufbeuren, 43 Crailsheim, 52 Braunschweig-Wagum, Celle und Goslar, 61 Werder, 72 Schwerin, 114 Weimar-Nohra, 115 Münsteuer/Ems, 116 Göppingen, 118 Stettin (Braunschweig-Broitzen), 115
Magdeburg-Süd
6 Flugzeugführerschulen B: 2 Neuruppin, 4 Barth, 14 Prag-Gbell, 16 Burg, 31 Brandis, 32 Prag-Rusin.

Ian...that may very well be right. That would make some sense for the Luftwaffe pilot Tischendorf. He was awarded the DKiG fairly early as Oblt, then later transferred to this unit...perhaps as an instructor, by which time he had been promoted...makes sense to me. Like I said, "inscription" is too dramatic a word for this...IMO it really just has his name scratched in the back to identify the owner
