It looks like it says "Mars" instead of "Marz"

I think you are right.
It is a "z" but the tails on it made it look like an "s" at first glance

As far as I remember they should be from the same person.

I got two other documents with the cross.
A congratulation breif, from a Oberst und kommandeur, and a letter informing him that he is, and I quote:
"Er ist höeren Ortes zum Lw.Erdkampfabzeichen eingereicht ."
All in all, a nice little group, and my first.
